a film that was nominated for an Academy Award and should have won... but Hollywood wasn't having that back in 1989.

(26,486 posts)2. Clearly, this appeals most to those of us who are of a certain age.
I was there for opening day of "Do the Right Thing" in Washington, DC, where it was the hottest day of the year, so I am one of those people of that certain age.

(128,706 posts)3. I took my mom to see it that summer
and since we were in Philly (~2 hours up the turnpike to NYC) we were already tuned in to NYC and the issues at the time, including being regular listeners to some of the black talk shows broadcast there, including Bob Law's "Night Talk". That was also the year when David Dinkins was running for (and later won) mayor in NYC (against HWSNBN or he will appear like Beetlejuice with a DU thread ).
(what's funny is that here in Philly, our ABC station is channel 6 with channel 7 unused, yet if we moved the antenna a certain way, we could easily pickup NYC's channel 7 ABC broadcast, albeit fuzzy, but the most watchable of their VHF channels)
