The belief in make believe and the lying and hypocrisy required to support said belief is baked into the religion. It’s only a matter of degree - how much the individual Christian adheres to the racist, misogynistic and inhumane tenets of the Bible, and how much they allow their outlook on the same to be modified by Enlightenment thought.

The evangelicals have been phased out the somewhat problematic Christianity from their 'faith' for a long time. You only have to listen to the rantings of their preachers to recognize this. In order to justify their lifestyles and frighten their congregations into obedience, they ignore the New Testament and focus on the Old.
They enjoy the vengeance and punishment stuff.

for an eye." I asked her when she first confused Christianity with the Old Testament and tried to explain that her savior specifically preached against it. She just kinda glazed over and said, "Well the bible is full of good things."

Never mind that she also didn't understand that Eye for an Eye was meant to limit people retaliating against one another without limit. She just saw the retribution and liked it. No point in arguing with these people.
