In November 1973 a journalist asked whether Nixon’s taxes had been accurately reported to only $476.

“The people have to know whether or not their President is a crook,” president Nixon responded. “Well, I am not a crook. I have earned everything I’ve got.”

Later he anyway had to pay most of his $467000 debt in back income taxes.
