They didn't have much time to write and rehearse it. And then they had to perform it live.

His writers always do an amazing job, but I think a lot of it is Colbert! I remember one time he was in the middle of taping his monologue when there was breaking news, so he just scrapped the prepared part and ad libbed the rest. He likes to stay current, imagine that's why he does these live shows after big news events.

And I started posting his monologue in early 2017 I think - what he had to say sure made me feel a little better so I figured others here would feel the same - and these days we sure need the humor!
