(3,974 posts)With Trump, they can just be themselves -- the prejudice, the anger, the ignorance -- and feel good about it.
They don't have to aspire to be anything better, ironically reminding me of Melania's slogan "Be best."

(3,974 posts)I've met a few Christians who sincerely emulate Jesus. They are wonderful people.
I've met many more people of various religions who use their religiousness as a clubs with which to beat others. And then show how flexible their adherence is when it becomes inconvenient.

(7,771 posts)...Sam makes it about Sam.
I disagree with his characterization of "the Left."
Trump is the most judgemental asshole who has ever held the White House.
His supporters fall into a few categories.
Those that are getting something - The Transactionals - Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Many on Wall Street, The Federalist Society, Some Evangelicals.
They essentially loathe him but he delivers the goods.
The true Magats - He represents and articulates the seething ball of rage that they have been indoctrinated into by Limbaugh, Hannity, and Bannon.
The Sheeple - They are the silent followers. This is some evangelicals, the Stepford wives, the low IQ admirers of Trump's endless branding exercise.
Sam is always butt hurt over the evil Left which refuses to genuflect before his greatness. When a real reasoned leftist debates Sam, like Chomsky, he is usually taken apart and he resents it. Leave it to Sam to frame his Trump critique with a back handed swipe at the Left.
Sam is a smart guy...a welcome brutal accurate critic of organized religion. Sometimes he just needs to get over himself.

(291 posts)Does the right have someone who can explain our hatred for trump to them? The fact that we all know he is using them. He absolutely can't stand his supporters, unless they fall in a certain upper tax bracket.
We know trumpism isn't going anywhere. But do we really need to spend our energy to try to convert them? I believe it's more than ideology, it's psychology. It's a mental issue. They continue, to this day, to say they are going to "take my guns away", while guns continue to hang from their bodies. They STILL fall for that.
These are people who are susceptible to brainwashing. How do you fix that?

(3,974 posts)Their logic is they need guns to stop the gov't from coming for their guns.
You are right about the connection between psychology and ideology.
We are not going convert MAGAts. Simply put, we have to outnumber them at the ballot box every time.
They have always been there. Trump just gave them a home. They will continue to be there with or without such a leader.
