After Hurricane Maria; there was little funding for repair. So the trump administration just let it die of neglect. Chinas new FAST Telescope will now be the World Leader.
It might have discovered an Intelligent Alien Civilization and new knowledge.

(128,502 posts)that I heard mentioned briefly on the news this morning, was the series of earthquakes that impacted Puerto Rico.
Although on the opposite coast from Arecibo, these still occurred only abut 40+ miles away due to the small size of the island. There was a good-sized initial one felt across the island, followed by a swarm of additional lesser (but often still-strong) ones and their aftershocks, all along or just off the coast of southern Puerto Rico.
And with respect to Maria, it was a Cat 4/Cat 3 when the eye literally cut across the Arecibo area, with sustained 140+ mph winds.
That same hurricane literally obliterated the NWS's San Juan Doppler Radar apparatus (and the path didn't even take it directly over the San Juan metro/surrounding area) -
