(4,980 posts)My Dad is overfilling his bird feeders instead of feeling like a republican of yore. I kept adding his name onto the list, except hes a retired petroleum engineer that wouldnt be caught dead being in politics.
Then theres my aunt who not only turned on tRump over the pandemic but also, lol, now derides gov. abbott. He should be concerned and thats awesome.
I had other names and added them in. Loved it.

(204,779 posts)I do come from a family of Republicans, not my generation, but my parents'. However, I've thought so many times that none of them would approve of or vote for the current crop of hate-filled Republicans. My parents and relatives of that generation were also liberal Republicans, when there was such a thing - and so was my grandmother. But after voting Republican for her entire life, my grandmother finally recognized that "her" party had changed and she voted for Bill Clinton in 1992 (and 1996 - at age 92 and 96!). She called me to tell me and I told her that I did, too - but we didn't need to tell the others...

(4,980 posts)Its been nuts. Who gets a vaccine, whos glad my parents (other than me) are taking care of my granny? Especially after she had a heart event during the TX power outage week? I worked to get her propane leak fixed, so yeah, its been crazy. Ill leave out some other things thats happened for an OP, sooon.
Uhhum, theres been interdependence and its been good.
When youve gotta survive, you do so as you can with whomever. That includes the niece that stone cold stopped three cousins from a life of racism. Were eye-to-eye on a couple-few things.
I still cant believe what came out of my aunts mouth about the governor. One uncle looks me in the eye again, because hes vaccinated and freeee. It is nuts. These are not liberals. My fathers been writing-in all manner of different names these years anyone is better than trump, etc.

(204,779 posts)But I know without question that she could never have stood Trump, nor would my father. He was an Eisenhower/Rockefeller Republican. He was actually acquainted with our former governor when my Dad was a young man. He was always very civic minded and worked on a tourism campaign for the city that involved the governor at that time.
But I also know that the last thing anyone in my family would accept is any kind of prejudice. I grew up in a fairly diverse community, went to school with kids of different races and backgrounds and it never dawned on me that anyone was "different" since no one ever said a thing - not my parents or my teachers and certainly not my grandmother.
My Dad was involved in more organizations than I knew, and he was friendly with folks of different political persuasions and backgrounds, he was what I'd call a "people person." He was also a world traveler, China, the USSR, the Middle East, he loved seeing different places and made friends wherever he went - and he took my mother, LOL. Actually, my grandmother was a world traveler, too - India, Kenya, also the USSR. So that must be where he got it, she was my Dad's mother.
My Dad's been gone for awhile now and I wonder every day what he'd think. I go to the cemetery on a weekly basis and light his perpetual light candle and I often fill him in on what's going on - and I know that he'd be as horrified as I am, but I do miss his advice.

(4,980 posts)Unfussy, he would have sliced trump down for the bullshitting extraordinaire that he was. People forget after 15 years of common sense missing. Especially with fox news, brightfart, and the like telling them what to think about everyone that makes them feel icky about sexuality, bullets, and gas.
Is what happened in my family, and were talking about it.

(204,779 posts)Despite what I consider the best host of the season. Granted, I was hoping for more political content, but I didn't think the other sketches were all that funny, either.
