(2,690 posts)He was a bad president, but at least he was psychologically damaged by his loss. The kid was killed in a train accident on the way to D.C. for the inauguration. That death and Franklins severe alcoholism (worsened by the death of his son, it is said) contributed to the failure of his presidency.
(I seem to remember seeing Pierce ranked high on the list of Handsomest Presidents. So theres that.)
Check it out here:

He ranks number 1! So, in the pageant of American Presidents, Pierce scores high on looks but fails in the talent portion of the competition.

(111,244 posts)because that was the first year women had the vote. Unfortunately, too many women got the vote and didn't know what to do with it and asked husbands and fathers for advice and that's how Harding got in. I know my grandmother and great grandmother, both Suffragettes, didn't fall for it.
Men will never get it that women don't have sex organs attached to their eyes. If we did, they'd be the ones wearing makeup and gut squishing underwear.

(111,244 posts)while Buchanan succeeded in starting one. Of course, a limited one might still break out, but I doubt he has the support Dixie did in 1860. Reality TV stardom only goes so far.
So he doesn't get to be the worst president in history, not yet, but his criminal neglect and addlepated posturing during the Covid crisis certainly gave Buchanan some competition.

I'd like to know what it's like 100 years from now, I'm willing to bet it goes Reagan, Dumdum, Buchanan. Johnson and Pierce were drunks, but they didn't do nearly as much damage as those three.

(3,396 posts)But on looking at the actual scores, his was the same as that of Franklin Pierce. So he finished tied for third worst, in the first survey for which he was eligible.

None of these other lunkheads can top that - not even Trump.

(9,895 posts)600,000 dead AMERICANS (including my mother) are on Trump's hands.
Shrub was a total disaster, no doubt; but he is a piker compared to the evil that is Trump.

(2,690 posts)Seriously, you look at the guy and you dont think mass murdering war criminal. At least not the way you think about it with Cheney and Rumsfeld. You think, instead, blundering nincompoop led astray by the evil genius that is Dick Cheney. (I know thats neither completely true nor would it be exculpatory even if it were. But there are still a lot of little people who think its possible for them to bump into Shrub at a bar and have a beer with him while talking babes and baseball. Even Loser-45s staunchest fans know that if they attempted to sidle up to Fatso at a bar, Big Matt Calamari would strong arm the crap out of them before they got within 2 barstools.)
But Trump is neither disarming or charming. Hes grown into a morbidly obese, slovenly attired, forgetful and petty vindictive chud. Also a mass murderer who was not a war criminal only because he couldnt find a way to start a war. And he couldnt find a way to start a war because most of the evil governments he might have attacked were his friends.
Between Dubya and Cheeto, they've got enough for a Nürnberg for each.
To say nothing, if a number of suspicions about certain events in their administrations are ever truly corroborated.
I certainly don't put much past either of them.
