Dr. Anthony Fauci, the United States' top infectious disease expert, on Saturday told CNN's Jim Acosta that he's "certain" smallpox and polio would still be present in the United States if their vaccine drives faced misinformation campaigns similar to the ones currently plaguing COVID-19 inoculation efforts.
"If you look at the extraordinary, historic success in eradicating smallpox and eliminating polio from most of the world and we're on the brink of eradicating polio if we had had the pushback for vaccines the way we're seeing for certain media, I don't think it would have been possible at all to" eradicate the two deadly diseases, Fauci said.
There's no one reason why people in the United States remain hesitant about or outright opposed to getting a COVID-19 shot, but Fauci and others, including President Biden, believe that misinformation coming through television screens and social media feeds has played a significant role in shaping people's views and, subsequently, slowed down the rollout as infections pick back up due to a combination of loosening restrictions and the spread of the more transmissible delta variant.

(57,073 posts)I had an old magat acquaintence call me a couple of days ago & ask if my body is covered with tumors from vaxes!
Spoke of a friend with numerous serious comorbidities & said the person got both J&J's. Oops: lie #1.
Then said within 24 hrs, body was civered in tumors. Likely lie #2. Not a doc but I don't think it's likely for tumors to grow overnight.
And this bs from an otherwise intelligent person who has numerous ancestors who were medical professionals!
Boggles my mind!

(204,779 posts)We've seen the videos of those in supermarkets who totally lose it when they're told that masks are required. And I told you about the guy who shouted about not being "a guinea pig!" when he heard me saying I'd been vaccinated. That set him off even though I hadn't said anything to him, or anyone, about anyone else getting the vaccine. I was just so relieved I'd finally been able to get vaccinated myself.
There are so many things in life that we may never understand completely. We drive cars, take planes, use computers, any number of modern conveniences that we may never completely understand how they work. But we're fortunate that there are those who do understand and made them available to us. And the vaccine is one of them. It's something that was given to us - in record time - in an effort to save our lives.

I will never forget how elated I was to get both of mine! 😉
I don't know why anyone would need to understand the vaccine in order to take it. Covidiots.
The anger seems to be a pervasive problem these days. They refuse vaccines but are angry at those of us with sense enough to listen to the medical experts!
It would bd funny if it weren't so serious.

(204,779 posts)My grandmother had one of those scars visible on her arm - I have one on my leg. My mother said she was given the choice when I was very little to have mine placed there so it wouldn't show like my grandmother's - and hers. We may not understand how or why it worked, but we need to be grateful to those who did because that vaccination saved countless lives and this generation is free from it. And we're facing the same choice now - and too many are rejecting it because they don't understand something that most of us don't - but, just like vaccines for smallpox and polio, we don't need to.

(204,779 posts)I know that most people have their own birth certificates, I only saw mine once. It was when my mother took me to get my driver's license and I needed to present it at DMV. When it was obvious the woman behind the counter had seen it, my mother leaped over the ropes in front of the counter and snatched it up - and got yelled at by the DVM lady. She never let me have anything since it was important and she said she was afraid I would lose it.
