Now the original strain, if people had taken that seriously enough, could have been brought under control much more easily than the delta strain currently doing the rounds.
With every new infection - especially of people only partly vaccinated and protected - increases the chance a newer, more aggressive strain appears.
Wife and me, both in our 70's, have had our two doses of AstraZeneca.
Younger relatives haven't, they are waiting for the Pfizer vaccine.
I tell them the vaccine doesn't work if you already have the virus, and it takes at least 2 weeks for the vaccination to become active.
If it comes down your street before that, you are in trouble.
I honestly think that waiting isn't an option.

(204,779 posts)We already watched the virus spread for over a year while TFG sat back and waited for it to disappear - so there was no time to waste! I got the Moderna, second shot in March, since that was the first to be available to me - as Dr. Fauci said! And I took my brother to get his as well!
The Biden administration has done an amazing job of making up for so much lost time and the vaccine is available pretty much everywhere now, doesn't cost a thing and only takes a few minutes. I drove to a town south of me since that's where I could get an appointment, now it's available in every pharmacy in town and most take walk-ins. There is no excuse.

(12,492 posts)Delta is 1000x more infectious. The vaccines were developed to fight the original virus. And we may need a booster. I'll certainly get it if one is safely developed. I wonder if you got the Moderna, will a booster also need to be Moderna?

(9,676 posts)If you don't stop it then it will mutate and be stronger.
If you wear a mask it will help in most circumstances.
A vaccine is safe and will prevent death or illness nearly every time.

(10,893 posts)When I say now theyre coming in sicker than ever, I mean it, said Mary Turner, President of the Minnesota Nurses Association and a COVID-19 ICU nurse at North Memorial Medical Center.
Intubating somebody was kind of the last resort. Putting a breath tube down them, kind of a last resort. Nope. Now they come in the emergency room, they come into our floor, and theyre right away intubated on their stomachs, said Turner. Covid is back stronger than ever.

People are getting sicker faster and theyre needing care quicker than they did with the previous surges weve had, said Helen Strike, President of two local Allina hospitals and part of the states Critical Care Coordinating Center that keeps an eye on hospital capacity.
