In her new book The Reckoning, Mary Trump explores how Donald Trumps presidency left the American experiment on the edge of failure and how so much unraveled in such a short period of time. She tells Lawrence ODonnell that similar to how Donald Trump has never been accountable for his actions, historically practically no powerful white men have been held accountable in America. (9,951 posts)... should have been an entire hour! It was good she did a couple segments, but we needed an hour with Lawrence and Mary.

(205,074 posts)Mary Trump not only has the inside story on anything Trump - she grew up with the family so she had a front row seat - but that extended family was "closer" than most. Fred Trump Senior pretty much ran everyone's lives. And besides, Mary is a trained clinical psychologist.
I don't know if you read her previous book, but I recommend it highly. She tells all the details of growing up Trump (her Dad was the eldest son) and she knows financial details as well since she and her brother sued to get their inheritance and she also accessed financial records of Donald's unscrupulous financial dealings for a record long article published by the New York Times in 2018.
I have it on disc and listen to it in my car - and I recommend that version since it's read by the author. Her second book, which they talked about last night, comes out August 17th.

(9,951 posts)... figure out how to listen in the car. I bought another book read by the author... but did not know my new laptop doesn't have the disc thing. I guess I have to get an "adapter" they said... or, I'll just read it the old-fashioned way!

(205,074 posts)Instead of the radio. The other one I've listened to - also read by the author - is "A Full Life: Reflections at 90," Jimmy Carter's autobiography. He really has led a fascinating life, from growing up in rural Georgia in the 1930s to his years at Annapolis and his Navy Career to his first run for public office - where he encountered and exposed serious cheating. I don't think he got to his run for president until disc #5, LOL. It's also a look at American history of the times - and it caused me to admire his values and accomplishments even more than I already did. His recollections of the 1978 Camp David Accords where he managed to orchestrate a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel were especially interesting.

(9,951 posts)...he read the book for a tape. He has a nice voice. Maybe I'll get that version. I can play it inside, on the stereo. Jimmy Carter appeared at Vroman's, a favorite bookstore of mine, in Pasadena. I was going to have him sign the book there - but when I got there I was stunned by the long, long line down Colorado Blvd. I thought I could just breeze in and meet Jimmy, and have him sign the book. Most celebrity signings are like that... No way for Jimmy Carter, he was a big draw... Well, then I was happy he did so well... bigger crowds than Jackie Chan and Julie Andrews!

(205,074 posts)It came out in 2015, just past his 90th birthday. I have a couple of other books on disc that I keep meaning to get to, but I've listened to Jimmy Carter numerous times since there's so much to take in - and I still learn something new every time!
And that's incredibly cool that you went to his book signing. If I could meet anyone in person, it would probably be President Carter. I also remember hearing that he would drive the Secret Service crazy since he'll stop and have a conversation with anyone - which may be why the line at his book signing was so long...

(3,386 posts)He has continued to con his supporters for money, over $100 million. When the NY Attorney General comes after him and his family, they will all fly away to some place (not Russia, Putin won't want him), that has no extradition agreements with the USA. What happens then is anyone's guess, will they live happily ever after, or will someone pick him up and bring them home?
But he won't be able to run again in 2024, he will be in jail, or out of the country.

(205,074 posts)And after his latest performance(s), not to mention all the criminal charges awaiting him, he'd be better off listening to whatever lawyers he has left and stop calling attention to himself and his ridiculous statements.
