1. Barring convincing evidence to the contrary,

I’d surmise that the real reason that Republicans in Congress oppose the Jan. 6th Commission is simple and straightforward: if allowed to do their work, the Commission will determine beyond a reasonable doubt that numerous Republican members of Congress committed illegal, felonious, even treasonable acts that day—acts for which their status as Congressmen and Senators does not provide them with immunity from prosecution and incarceration if found guilty. Republicans have therefore nothing to lose by trying to hinder the commission, and much to lose if allowed to do its job.
