They’re facing a tough choice. On the one hand, if they accept vaccination, they keep their job and become far less likely to die of COVID. On the other hand, if they decline vaccination, they lose their job and become much less safe. Hard to see which way to go in a complex conundrum like this. I guess remaining faithful to the Rebublican delusional system makes a considerable difference. That, and maybe the belief that they will be able to kill people with their breath.

17. In our small town

Our former sheriffs father just died from Covid. They say he was healthy as a horse and when he got out of hospital, he would get the vaccine. He never got the chance.Buried him the other day.

This could be a litmus test.

To put it simply, the good sheriffs will get vaccinated and stay, the bad ones (the brutes, bigots, cult 45 members) won't and will leave, at least in San Francisco.

Wishful, simplistic thinking, I know. Yet we're seeing vaccine requirements in more places so maybe they will expose and weed out the non-complying folks in many areas, while encouraging others to get the vaccine. I know there are some antivaxers who mask up and vote democratic, and I feel for them. But the rethugs who aren't vaccinated, won't wear a mask, want to prohibit masks, and don't believe in the virus are dangerous.

And you'll find a few who really don't want to put a vaccine in their body who voted Dem. I know a few people from my local co-op who don't believe in vaccines.

I also know a few people with certain medical conditions that were told not to get the vaccine because it could affect their liver and might not offer immunity. They're not exactly antivaxers, but they're unvaccinated and voted democratic.

I agree the vast majority of antivaxers are right wing nuts, and Florida is skewed and screwed.
(My cousin in Florida just got out of the hospital after 10 days in with covid.)

I don't recall the last numbers I saw, but some of the unvaccinated indicated they might be persuaded to get the vaccine under certain conditions, but some said they would never get it.
I suspect that some who might be persuaded are Dems who are fearful or mistrustful of a vaccine that hasn't gotten FDA approval, among other reasons.

skipping on vaccines in general. I’m in Florida so it’s mostly just stupidity preventing them from getting it. DeSatan gave his “I am standing in your way” speech here and got a round of applause from our city officials, all except one, God love her. Between the FBI investigations and covid it will be interesting to see who’s standing when it’s all over.

We really need to begin to push back hard on the right's efforts to exploit the current spike in crime rates for their own purposes. The currrent spike is not fully understood by anyone, but given that it corresponds pretty directly with the pandemic, that's a pretty good indicator that the pandemic and the resulting social stresses are a major factor.

And unfortunately, this shameless exploitation has not been the exclusive province of the right. Here in NY, in the recent mayor's race, Eric Adams weas just as shameless in exploiting cuts to the recruitment and administrative budgets of the NYPD -- cuts which had no operational impact on the department -- as being somehow responsible for the spike in crime rates. We need to call this out wherever and whenever it occurs!

Police officers and sheriff's offices do NOT prevent crime! They investigate crimes after the fact! Only in the very rare instance that an officer actually intervenes in a crime in progress can it be said that law enforcement prevents crimes -- and thanks to a Supreme Court ruling from a few years back, police are not even required to intervene when they see a crime in progress.
