The "sea of lies" about COVID and vaccines can be overcome by people's "better angels" says Fauci, and protect the world from a more deadly virus.
The epidemic in the United States could be ended once and for all if everyone would get vaccinated, Fauci said. Barring that, he worries we're in it for the long term.
The unvaccinated will continue to get sick and some will die. The young and healthy are statistically not likely to become seriously ill if infected, but they don't live in a vacuum, he said. The more people who are infected, the more chance the virus has to mutate into an even more dangerous variant.

(205,237 posts)I cannot understand why those who got vaccinated all their lives to protect them from deadly diseases refuse to get vaccinated against a virus that is killing Americans in record numbers. And they are the reason...

(205,237 posts)I just got off the phone with my father's cousin - she called me to tell me that her sister has died - of Covid. And she was vaccinated. This is my Dad's family who I know the best of my extended family, all lifelong Democrats. We had quite a chat about the idiocy of those who refuse to get vaccinated - since, thanks to the unvaccinated, it's now causing the vaccinated to get Covid.

(205,237 posts)When I saw that she'd called, I was afraid of bad news. Her brother turned 90 this year, but instead it was her younger sister. My grandfather was the eldest son of a large Irish family, so my Dad has a lot of first cousins, but these are the ones I know the best, the children of my grandfather's closest brother - they joined up together and fought in WWI. A couple of years ago, I went to a ceremony honoring my great-uncle. He fought at the front in France and he was presented with a posthumous Silver Star.

(205,237 posts)But 2 Congressional districts sent representatives with flags which had flown over the Capitol, they were quite excited, having never honored a WWI vet before. And 4 of his 5 children were there to accept the honors, the youngest daughter had died quite young. And his eldest daughter read a letter he had set home to his sister from the front describing the battle. I knew his wife quite well since she was close to my grandmother, but I never met my grandfather, either (who I learned brought ammunition to the front on horseback - I have his Army discharge papers!) since he died when my Dad was 12.
