(111,222 posts)Oz is different from the US, they had really strict lockdown and quarantine early on and I'm sure most Australians thought the whole thing was over. Well, oops, it's not, and now they're angry about that.
We know the absolute immunity to the Delta variant seems to have waned over 8 months, but the 2 dose vaccine is still protecting people from serious illness, it's something like 97% effective against serious disease but only 84% against mild illness. The delta variant is just so aggressive a bug that mild, short infections are likely inevitable. I don't think we're going to see new shots coming out until the bug mutates beyond the present vaccines, something it might never do. This guy is overstating the booster issue.
Australians did their bit, they brought infection rates of the original strains down to nearly nothing. They thought they were safe, so very few got the vaccine. Now the rug's been pulled out from under them.
