(40,190 posts)For what? A doctor is trying to keep these same people from dying.
Actually, this shouldnt be a surprise. We have always known there are terrible people in the world. Now we know it is impossible to save these terrible people from themselves.

President Obama grew up there. But apparently this epidemic of anti-science and bigoted hatred is spreading everywhere, just like Covid.

Secondly, there is a deep anti-science vein in the Hawaiian population and others because some of the interaction has gone really badly.
One example: my friends husband attended a presentation by an scientist announcing they were releasing Mu in Kaneohe Bay.
Ben had his arm up to talk and the guy just kept bypassing him. Finally he came up to ask him a question after the talk because he never was called on and the scientist said well do you have a PhD? If not then why should I listen to you? Ben has been fishing on that bay his whole life and his father did and his grandfather didand his great grandfather did, and back from there.
Of course Ben is brown and the prof is haole.
Nobody eats Mu.
They destroyed the habitat for all the yummy reef fish and replaced them with fish nobody wants to eat. Thanks Mr know it all , neva like talk to local folks. Irk.
Many similar stories, to my sorrow.
Bens wife, my friend, was kayaking in the bay when a grad student who was obviously from the mainland yelled at her to get out if there, that she was not allowed there. Bullshit.
Of course my friend is brown and the grad student was haole.
She is an educator herself and lives right up that stream.
There are no private streams or beaches here. She was just being a jackass.
Ive had local people complain to me about scientists who make so so much money and I know for sure they dont. Thinking that scientists are in it only for money when they are not.
Who do you want working on vaccines? Scientists.
As I said, complex situation. But Im really sad to hear Lt Green is being harassed. We must not stand for that garbage.

(204,804 posts)I've never been to Hawaii, though my parents have. My impression was that it was more multicultural than most areas here on the mainland and that was a good thing. That's why I was surprised that there was prejudice against this doctor, who sure seems tolerant of the idiots in his midst, plus he holds elective office. I think I got that impression from President Obama, too - since he also comes from a multicultural family.
And I'm also incredibly sorry that they aren't taking care of the environment there. It's really a unique and beautiful place.

(17,623 posts)We also have some of the nutcase trumpets as every state does.
I grew up in a neighborhood in which Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Koran, Portuguese and haole people lived and still live as one community. We celebrate Obon with our Japanese neighbors. I went to Japanese language school and thought everyone did in the US! Lol. Kids.
We appreciate lt Green very much.
Aloha, stay well.
