In a recent interview with Der Spiegel to promote her latest book, Mary Trump, Donald's niece, explained that she believes that her uncle is a fascist, and that the rest of the Republican is following his lead by trying to destroy democracy in America. Not only that, but she also says that Democrats are not taking the threat that these people pose seriously enough, and THAT is a huge problem on its own. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses the claims made by Mary Trump and why she's absolutely correct with her analysis.

(175,728 posts)She's an excellent writer.

(204,695 posts)I've listened to her first book more than once and I agree, she's a very effective writer and I took away a lot of insights.
For her new book, I'm only on disc #2 so far, but it's a pretty harsh history lesson, she goes back to the failures of Reconstruction and how the Southern states still haven't moved on from the Civil War. She's also pretty tough even on the recent presidents we like - I'm hoping that there's some optimism later on in the book.

(204,695 posts)And the very beginning was a bit tough to get through since it was a brutal history lesson - not that she's in the least inaccurate, but it wasn't what I was expecting being familiar with her first book. I like having it on audio, I listen to books in my car. And both of her books - and my other favorite, Jimmy Carters autobiography - are read by the author.

(175,728 posts)For me, there are too many distractions to listen to in a car. Crazy traffic and all that.

(204,695 posts)I bought the first book for myself, then got 2 more for Christmas gifts and it had gone up considerably. And I don't exactly do city driving around here in the North Country, so listening to a book keeps me company.

(175,728 posts)Better than the close to $30 that I was seeing before. Driving up in your neck of the woods might actually be a pleasure. I've always preferred country roads to expressways.

(204,695 posts)And the price for the hardcover is also $17.39 while the audio book is $29.99. Well, there are 5 discs and it says the book's already a bestseller.
And you're right, I don't do much highway driving, it's mainly back roads if I drive north and last week I went to a family funeral in a small town south of here. I got so lost on my way home that I would have welcomed some traffic or signs of civilization, it was mostly horse pastures and a whole lot of cows.

(175,728 posts)Believe it or not, Amazon sells on eBay. You get to drive scenic routes. We mostly see a sea of red brake lights in the city. Getting lost sucks.
Rhiannon12866
(204,695 posts)The thing about Amazon is that you can avoid shipping costs, not that I order that much, but I haven't gone in person to a lot of stores in the last year and a half - I get groceries, pet food and prescriptions and gas if I need them just once a week these days.
And everywhere is "scenic" around here, but I didn't appreciate it when I was in a blind panic. I figured I just got gas so I'd be okay as long as it didn't get dark. It was a funeral for my Dad's cousin who just turned 88 and she was fully vaccinated.
p.s. Let me know what you think of the book. I'm only on disc #2 for the second time since there is so much to take in.
