Why I had ashes smeared on my forehead. I explained to him the meaning of Ash Wednesday. He then said, "Well, have a happy Ash Wednesday." He then realized how silly that was.

For years we had a running joke, him saying "Happy Ash Wednesday" and "Happy Good Friday", and me wishing him a "Happy Yom Kippur" and a "Happy Tisha B’Av".

Unfortunately, he died a few years ago, and it was not a happy day.
