(205,074 posts)I missed 60 Minutes tonight, so I made it a point to watch online - and this interview is going to lead the news this week. I also just tried to add the Overtime segments that didn't air on TV. And I knew that DUers would be interested after all the Cambridge Analytica news that was posted when that scandal broke. Why that didn't have an impact is a mystery to me.

(12,419 posts)They were altering their messaging to be more anger-inducing to align with the engagement algorithm, otherwise their content just wasn't getting distributed. So Facebook isn't just carrying extremist content, or even just encouraging it, it pretty much requires it. Makes you wonder how much of today's Republican extremism is TFG coddling and how much is instigated by Facebook.

(205,074 posts)And I know what you mean, people always have an excuse, like their relatives use it, that sort of thing. I would discourage my relatives from using it - if they want to stay in touch there's email and texting. And hopefully nobody's watching or trying to sell you something.

(11,982 posts)...and what's good for the company.
On a relatively minor level, that's why soft drinks have so much sugar. Or why cigarettes still exist.
On a much bigger level, that's why we actually had to invent laws to stop companies from dumping toxins into the air and the water.
Left to their own devices, companies tend to choose what's best for themselves, regardless of the greater consequences. This is nothing new. Facebook is essentially a new kind of polluter.

(8,282 posts)Im so glad I watched all of the clips. My mother passed away 3 weeks ago so theres no reason to keep FB active anymore. Unfortunately one of my ladies groups uses it to keep in touch and schedule events. Im the Secretary of the group until January and then Im going to bail. Its caused me great unrest and has torn my family apart with their trumpy posts on Facebook. Its time to say goodbye to my classmates and live my life. Thank goodness for DU.
