I disagree that cost of housing is why homelessness is low. Prison labor is an important part of the economic profile for Mississippi and Louisiana and Louisiana is number 1 and Mississippi number 3 for incarceration rate.

1. Most people in other states just don't know how much cheaper

housing is in most places in Mississippi. You can get a decent house here for $70,000-80,000. After you finance it and add in your insurance, you'll pay about $500-600 per month, and that is to OWN a house. Rents can be expensive depending on where you want to live, but because it is so affordable and because loans aren't hard to get, a lot of people down here are homeowners.

My house cost significantly less than that, and my payments are much lower. I've visited plenty of other places and thought about moving away from here, but I think my quality of life is higher here than it would be if I moved to California and lived hand-to-mouth. Life isn't as exciting here, and there are certain aspects of it that are distasteful, but the lack of worry I have about basic survival from month to month more than make up for those negatives. And when I get tired of it, I can always take a trip.
