1. I remember when Putin left Russia to come to the US for his big PR tour about 20 years ago...

He was even interviewed on NPR and many lauded him (he is a LOT more fluent in English than you probably realize and he is VERY savvy about the West and Americans). I cringed, realizing how very much we would likely underestimate him-- despite his KGB background and his psychic injuries/resentment with respect to the loss of the USSR and thus the prestige. We are about to find out whether we will pay a price for that underestimation. It goes back much further than Trump, but damn if Trump hasn't put us in a horrific position for reasons we probably don't yet fully know.
