(21,300 posts)Tom Reed resigned abruptly just a couple weeks ago. A year ago, after he called Cuomo "shameful and disgusting" over sexual harassment claims before there was even an investigation, and then demanded that Cuomo resign and be arrested, it was revealed that Reed had been physically escorted out of a lounge where he had groped a lobbyist.
He denied it initially, but the young woman, on her first lobbying assignment, had contacted her supervisor and a colleague immediately afterward for advice on reporting and handling it, so there was a record. Plus there were several witnesses in the lounge, including the bartender and a male lobbyist who escorted Reed out.
Reed had been gearing up to run for governor, but when he finally admitted that the allegations were true, he blamed it on a problem with alcohol, dropped his gubernatorial plans, and said that he would not run for another term. But he did not resign!
When his resignation was announced recently it turned out that he had held onto in his Congressional seat until offered a job with a DC lobbyist firm, Prime Policy Group. Prime was formed by a merger of the firm Gold and Liebensgood with the firm of Charles Black, Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, and Peter Kelly.
But Reed, who was first elected in 2010 as a Tea Party candidate, always claimed to be a moderate who favored bipartisanship.
Good riddance, but due to gerrymandering, we will still get stuck with another Republican. The western NY areas outside of Buffalo and Rochester need some stronger Dem organization to counter rural Republican influence. In the 23rd district there are a few small Dem cities and some college towns that I think would respond well to good Dem organization and activity here. We can't afford to write off any districts.

(204,586 posts)These days in the Republican party, thanks to TFG who gave them permission to air their grievances, all bets are off. And I was in NY-20, leans Republican, until President Clinton visited the area to campaign for Kirsten Gillibrand who won over long time incumbent John Sweeney in 2006. When Senator Clinton was appointed Secretary of State by Obama, Governor Paterson appointed Gillibrand as senator to fill the seat. She chose Scott Murphy, whose house I regularly pass every day, to succeed her and he won in a special election in 2009, but then lost to yet another Republican in 2010. I worked on both of his campaigns.
But then we got redistricted in 2013, were joined with the northernmost counties, and inherited Rep. Bill Owens from Plattsburgh, a moderate Democrat. But unfortunately he retired in 2015 and chose candidate Aaron Woolf to succeed him. I went to the local meetup to see and hear him, thought he sounded great. I made GOTV calls for him, but unfortunately for the North Country, that's when we got Stefanik. There have been protests at her local headquarters since the day she took office, but she's gone from bad to worse to even frighteningly worse.
And that's the thing - New York is known as a reliably "blue state," but that's only because of the more populous areas downstate. Those of us in the North and the West often live in Republican strongholds. Before Kirsten Gillibrand ran in 2006, the Democrats often didn't even bother to field a candidate here.

(204,586 posts)Isn't Jamie Raskin just the best?! He was brilliant as head impeachment manager, we're so fortunate to have him on the January 6th Committee - and he's also speaking out for Constitutional rights! A man for all seasons - and issues!

(204,586 posts)I subscribe to the site, but I was considering dropping it since they also post clips of right-wing speeches, too. I'm just glad I stuck with it, since I can tell the difference, and this speech of Jamie Raskin was must-see (and hear)!
