(111,124 posts)Vapid talking heads at the end almost ruin it.
There are sister villages to Umoja where men are tolerated as long as they defer to the women when it comes to running things. They don't, the women make sure they leave quickly. Oh, and daughters in these villages don't undergo FGM, that was the first thing they stopped when they started running their own lives.
This is breaking the chain. As the vapid talking heads at the end show, it's probably all that will work, breaking silly women out of conventional thinking as much as patriarchal men.

(111,124 posts)about this village and what they've accomplished. Some of them interview the men they left behind and the rage tells you exactly why these women got their children and then got out. One hopes that the boys, growing up without being exposed to so much male rage and violence, will be less violent themselves, especially toward women and children.
It might be the only way to break the chain, giving up on the idea of marriage and being tied to violent men.

Shame it is still relevant.

(113,048 posts)end to violence against women and girls around the world. One Billion Rising refers to the fact that ONE WOMAN IN THREE worldwide will suffer violence in her life. And that violence is a feature of the patriarchy, designed to keep women under control.
