Baby in Womb Grabs Doctor's Finger

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="

Giving birth can be a blur but a Valley couple took a picture that brings it into crystal clarity. The image of their baby reaching out of her mother's womb to hold the finger of the doctor performing a C-section has gone viral.

The little baby's name is Nevaeh -- Heaven spelled backward. Even the hospital staff told her parents there's something almost spiritual about the picture of Nevaeh holding the doctor's finger before technically being born.

"It was such an amazing photo. Hospital staff had possibly heard of it happening but they had never seen a photo of it," said Alicia Atkins, Nevaeh's mother.

Few lives will be as well documented as little Nevaeh's. Her mother is a professional photographer who owns A Classic Pin-Up in Glendale. However, it was her dad, Randy, who snapped the picture.

"The doctor called me over and said, 'Hey, she's grabbing my finger.' So I ran over there and just grabbed the shot and I was just in awe looking at it. It was such an amazing picture," said Randy Atkins, adding that he was nervous about missing the precious and fleeting moment as he hurried to snap a picture.

4. Point Well Taken

Point well taken point anti-abortionists...Now can we have a discussion about how many babies (after birth) that are left under-nourished, abused, and neglected? Are you going to take responsibility for providing each and every one these babies a caring and loving home? This is when the mother can't provide for them? No, don’t tell me let me guess, I am going to receive a big lecture about personal responsibility, no government safety net, and use of contraception - inconsistent argument here…

5. This has no bearing on the abortion debate

Nobody would "abort" a baby about to be born. Anyone trying to use this as a "see? Abortion is evil!" card is drinking from the wrong milkshake.

Hence I am a little troubled by the description of what is an unremarkable grasping reflex among human babies (and primates) designed to make sure the newborn clings to its mother, as something "almost spiritual" and a "precious and fleeting moment." It sure does sound like anti-abortionists' propaganda to me. The fact is, this baby did not consciously "grab the doctor's finger." The fact is, if you stick anything in the baby's hand, it's fingers will reflexively close around it. Try it sometime with a newborn.

8. That doesn't make it any less amazing!

No one would expect a baby in utero to do something like that with deliberation; nature is just amazing. And, it is a very tender and unique photo, taken by a loving father.

10. The birth of a baby is a precious and fleeting moment. It is, always, a miracle.

That has nothing to do with abortion.

The cesarean was being performed when the baby was how far along?

Long enough to live on its own most likely, long enough to be viable.

Most abortions take place long before viability.

This is spiritual but not relevant to a discussion of abortion.

11. I agree. Birth is a miracle. The grasp reflex? Not so much.

The video was entitled "Baby in Womb Grabs Doctor's Finger" not "Miracle of Birth." It falsely suggests the baby consciously grabbed the doctors' finger. Unfortunately, the loony teavangelicals use stuff like this to propagandize.

Unless it's an emergency.

However, anti-abortion activists will latch on to this and distort it for their own use.

A few weeks ago I got to see my new baby boy suck his thumb on the ultrasound monitor. Quite amazing.

but isn't that baby out of the womb and in the birth canal?

Doesn't matter, I suppose. But the whole "in the womb" thing does grate of right-to-lifer logic.

A newborn grasped a finger. Okay.

16. It was a C-section baby. Li'l Nevaeh never got near the birth canal

Sometime after the 3rd trimester, when the fetus becomes truly viable, everybody is anti-abortion (except, of course, life of the mother). Those 8½ month abortions the Right to Lifers like to rail about are almost always life threatening to the mother a/o involve babies that already dying.

Bad omen if your first impression of humanity is a fart joke. By the by, babies instinctively grip fingers or sticks when placed on their palms. It's a throwback to our marmoset-like ancestors.
