College Enrollment Decreasing because of High Tuition

1. The dumbing down of America.

Pricing the middle class out of a higher education, making it an exclusive right of the rich.

2. Although not blaming anyone specifically, the video implies it is something the colleges are doing.

The reality is that state funding for colleges has been plummeting. In-state tuition has been lower than out-of-state for because of state funding. When that funding disappears, tuition costs must go up. The state legislatures then turn around and act shocked at the increases in tuition and sometimes cap tuition. It's a political reality that is not captured in the OP.

3. No, he explains quite clearly that Reagan started de-funding college and has

continued into today with Chris Christie.... He said clearly that the loss of funding from federal and state aid has caused tuition burdens to increase for individuals.. And in the long run, its an economic disaster.

4. Actually, it will not be an economic disaster for two reasons:

1. With state de-funding nearly complete, tuition will not rise as steeply as in the past.

2. Large, urban campuses and community campuses are growing very rapidly. These campuses specialize in only certain majors, hire almost exclusively instructors (rather than professors), and have other means of saving overhead; thus, they are less expensive.

Students will have alternatives to the traditional campuses. They will be able to choose between high costs or high reputation. The scale will run from private school (most expensive) to traditional public (less expsensive) to the newly emerging alternatives (least expensive).

5. The college years!!

When I was in college, I was lucky and received some scholarships and grants. I did not have to take out massive loans, but in the end my only loan was for about 11k.

At the same time, a fellow student who was the program as myself was not as lucky. He did not receive scholarships or grants, he did however have plenty of loans. He had take three jobs, two were part time, and one was full. He did this everyday, and once he told me he only about 1:30 of sleep on a dailies. He was brave and determined, he eventually graduated, but to this day he still has to paying off massive loans.

Another thing when I met him he weighed about 230-240lb, when we graduated, he weighed about 140lb. Keep in mind he was also 6ft tall...
