Our President says this is his Favorite James Taylor song

Live: "Your Smiling Face".

Whenever I see your smiling face,
I have to smile myself
Because I love you, yes, I do.
And when you give me that pretty little pout,
It turns me inside out.
There's something about you, baby,
I don't know.

Isn't it amazing a man like me
Can feel this way,
Tell me how much longer,
It could grow stronger every day.
Oh, how much longer?

I thought I was in love a couple of times
Before with the girl next door,
But that was long before I met you,
Now I'm sure that I won't forget you.
And I thank my lucky stars
That you are who you are,
And not just another lovely lady
Set out to break my heart.

Isn't it amazing a man like me
Can feel this way,
Tell me how much longer,
It could grow stronger every day.

No one can tell me that I'm doing wrong today, whenever I see you smile at me.
No one can tell me that I'm doing wrong today
Whenever I see your smiling face my way.
No one can tell me that I'm doing it wrong today.
No one can tell me that I'm doing it wrong today.

Oh. Well, gotta disagree with Prez O. His best song is "Carolina In My Mind". TwilightGardener Jan 2013 #1
If it's the faster-paced '68 version, my number one would be "Carolina In My Mind". pacalo Jan 2013 #2
I have never heard the faster version, thanks--but I prefer the slower (sadder) one. TwilightGardener Jan 2013 #4

I'd put "Your Smiling Face" way above the slow-paced version of "CIMM", though.

I will always remember, as a kid in the 70's, my mom singing it when it came on the radio and telling me that poor James Taylor was messed up on drugs. I barely had a clue what drugs were. Pretty cool that he's alive and well and performing at the inauguration almost 40 years later.

In musical taste, a lot depends on the year you were born. I would nominate Sweet Baby James, since that album hit when I was a senior in high school.

I enjoyed listening to it for hours.
Guess it was a good thing that I lived alone.

but James Taylor's ultimate best song is this one...

Handyman..

hey girls gather round
listen to what I"m putting down
hey baby I'm your handyman

i'm not the kind who uses pencil or rule
I'm handy and I'm no fool
I fix broken hearts but I know that I truly can

If your broken heart should need repair
Then I am the man that you should see
I whisper sweet

they'll come running to me

here is the main thing that I want to say
i'm busy 24 hours a day
I fix broken hearts, but i know that I Truly can....

com a com a coma come come
oh they'll come running to me.... meeeeee
here is the main thing I want to say
I'm busy 24 hours a day
I fix broken hearts I"m your handyman

...and Del Shannon.

So, James. If you've got a Grammy Winner, and a Billboard #4...you didn't build that. You didn’t get there on your own. You took the lyrics of Otis Blackwell, the tune of Jimmy Jones. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you the line "Come-uh come-uh come-uh come come, Yeagh Yeagh Yeagh". James, you took the song to the top, but you’re not on your own, we’re in this together.

...which is not the same as the NRA song "Fire, and Reign",

Or the corporate employment strategy song "Fire and Rein In",

Or the climate change/chaotic weather denial song "Fire? and Rain?",

But a song about the personal experiences of many Americans, of loss, of longing, of a need to return...
