Mitt Romney has his way with his dead father-in-law's soul. And he didn't even buy it breakfast.

I don't believe in Mormonism, and as an atheist, I believe all religions are bunk.

But, what makes this substantially different from a religious person praying for the soul of a dead nonbeliever, or a believer from a different faith? If it has zero effect on the outcome, what's the harm?

They main annoyance for someone if they knew they were posthumously converted would simply be going against their wishes. People who aren't Mormon are popping up on lists saying they're Mormon. If you don't believe in Mormonism and think their political pursuits are "hogwash," then you probably don't want your name associated with them in anyway. Praying for someone doesn't get your name on a list saying "you're Mormon!"

That's my thought, anyhow.

the Mormon proxy baptism doesn't "convert" anybody, according to their theology, it simply offers the dead an opportunity to acheive a higher state of of an afterlife if they accept it. Of course, if they're right (they're not!) then it simply gives someone who is convinced that he's dead and can still make conscious choices an option that most of us would take if we found ourselves in those circumstances. To me, that makes it essentially no difference from a prayer for the soul of a dead person, whether or not the pray-er and the prayee are of the same faith tradition or not.

I simply cannot stop my religious friends from saying a prayer according to their faith traditions when they grab a glass of Rogue's Dead Guy Ale from the mini-keg that I have directed for my memorial service, after which it's empty, I want my ashes placed into, and the whole thing tossed off the Pacific Northwest coast. If their pleadings with their invisible skyfather upon witnessing the urn with my ashes offends anybody else at the service, then it's their problem.

Even if Mormon proxy baptism did "convert" a person according to their theology, if it's all bunk, then what's the harm?

Curious if mormon dogma believes in the protestant cornerstone of predestination. I doubt it since I think I've read that they emphasize moral works. but if the do believe in predestination, couldn't they just convert everyone living and yet to be born, since god has already decided if you'll go to heaven or not, no matter what you do. anyway.

Perhaps Mormons do what they do simply for the headlines. Any press is good press!
