Haven't heard this in awhile. I was just thinking that the intro kind of reminds me of Heart's Crazy on You...

Good! Mason Williams got his big chance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Do you remember Them Poems?
Witness: Them Toad Suckers

A bit of irreverence.

Hope you are doing well.

"Them Tummy-Gummers"!!

Unfortunately, years ago, my brother stole my "Mason Williams Phonograph Record" album that had those in it, and then he threw it away! (I still haven't forgiven him for that sin!) It was a pretty goood album, with several other songs that I really liked and still occasionally think about. ("The Prince's Panties" was hysterical!)

7. The producer, Mike Post, wrote the famous bridge that glued it all together

Mike Post is probably best known for for his TV theme songs for such series as Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, The A-Team, NYPD Blue, Renegade, The Rockford Files, L.A. Law, Quantum Leap, Magnum, P.I., and Hill Street Blues.

And that's your unsolicited factoid for the day.

L.A.’s “wrecking crew” musicians played on the hit version, as they did on so many 1960s pop recordings

Williams later re-recorded it (on his “Hand Made” LP in 1970) with solo acoustic guitar, minus the bridge.

More unsolicited factoids!

And I suspect Mason Williams was not unhappy with the jingle he made from the smash hit; Post delivered in spades.

One more unsolicited factoid :

Mike Post, an accomplished guitar player, was a member of the Wrecking Crew for a short time, but it didn't take him long to realize he didn't have the studio chops to compete against Bill Pitman, Al Casey, Barney Kessel, and Tommy Tedesco.

Williams refused. He did not want to cheapen the song or allow an oil company to use it.

I like both versions but did think the "bridge" version could sound rather strident, leaving one to wait rather impatiently for the lovely guitar to rejoin
