Rian Johnson Creating All-New Star Wars Trilogy

I know a lot of you don't go to the movies group...

Pardon my while I just lose all control. Johnson is the biggest bright spot in the current trilogy in regards to the production. He's had some fantastic films so far (Brothers Bloom, you!) so getting to see him work on something from the ground up? Very exciting - and hopefully part of the Old Republic era going back a thousand years or more to work fresh.

This is a PR so pasted in full from: http://www.starwars.com/news/rian-johnson-writer-director-of-star-wars-the-last-jedi-to-create-all-new-star-wars-trilogy

For director Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was just the beginning of his journey in a galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.

As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.

No release dates have been set for the new films, and no porgs were available for comment.

But, to be fair, Ep7 had so many different pressures on it to just reassure fans that they knew what the fans were looking for (not another prequel trilogy) while also trying to update and expand. I think the whole thing just overwhelmed him on top of there being too many scriptwriter changes along the way. I'm hoping that Johnson is leaving him in a far better place with things mapped out with where to go.

But man, Johnson doing what I hope will be an old republic story or something utterly unexpected is just a thrilling prospect.

Yeah!! I came here to post this same story from a different website, and found yours.

But, oddly, the one I found says THIS:

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson has been set by Disney and Lucasfilm to write and direct a trilogy of films that will fall under the Star Wars brand but will be a completely new story, with original characters, set in a different galaxy. Johnson is teaming with Ram Bergman, his longtime collaborator who, after producing the Johnson-helmed Looper and Brick, produced The Last Jedi with Kathleen Kennedy."

(Emphasis mine)

A different galaxy????? Might as well not even be Star Wars if that's truly the case.

I hope your info -- about it just being a different corner of the same galaxy -- is more accurate, and the bit I found is just some reporter's misunderstanding.

Kennedy said something more along the lines of "a different corner of the galaxy" than we've seen before. So it shifts us away from the core worlds and possibly to an outer rim area far away from where everything else has unfolded.
