In 1976 UF required calculus if you majored in business

UF = University of Florida in Gainesville

I initially majored in biz in 76 but that requirement gave me pause. Have you ever used calculus in your business career?

yes I'm bored lol, thanks for indulging me, kind ladies and gentlemen of DU.

At McGill, recent B Comm graduate. She doesn't use it in her career, at least yet.

she starts doing sophisticated computer modeling of some kind of business data. I can see requiring algebra but calculus? I don't know.

terms of large outages (over 30 minutes) compared to total outages. The area under the derived curves became key in determining annual targets.

The actual formulas for measuring success were a bit more complicated, but that is the gist of the problem.

If you have an outage - make it a short one.

It required 4 calculus classes sequentially.

I changed my degree to Special Ed for Emotionally Conflicted.

I became much less emotionally conflicted.

I was living in Wisconsin where my career options were limited. I ended up working in computers. I got job as a programmer for a paper company. I knew the job was going to be programming payroll. I thought I would be calculating payroll. Instead I designed freaking spreadsheets. Designing spreadsheets is something I did in my advanced typing class in high school. Designing spreadsheets involves arithmetic skills.

I got to use high school algebra only one time: When we had a change in the tax code.

I could have worked as an actuary, if I had moved to Stevens Point, which is pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

Calculus is used by economists.

and it was required that we take a five credit hour course in Calculus. I made the stupid mistake of taking it the same semester I took Senior Corporate Finance. That was 1985. Aced both of them. Never used it practically again, but as someone else said, it does make one use their brain!
