Deleted bookface having found the conversation untenable.
What's new with DU? I see a few pre-2002 users still active. The "Shock-and-Awe" years.
Prost!

(149,593 posts)We have an In Memoriam page now, for DU'ers who have died. The link is at the bottom of every page.
You might check out the Forums & Groups tab at the top. There are a lot of Groups, probably one for every interest.

(1,227 posts)I remember you, too! Gosh, that was back when I was a misanthropic grad student. I regret every post I made back then.
Two Ph.D.s later and I still kinda think fondly about a few of the originals like Underpants and Kat.
So we're onto DU3 or 4 now?
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,593 posts)And we're onto DU 3 now. It works well.
Underpants is here and still posts now and then. I'm not sure I remember Kat.

(1,227 posts)I was so busy back then I'm likely blocking usernames from my memory.
Now I'm retired and wish I was still that busy!

(1,227 posts)When you said passed on I assumed you meant moved on. I can't believe that I had some really formative conversations with friends who really shaped my perspectives in my early thirties who are literally gone now.

On edit: I see your 20 in your profile. I retired from teaching college in Oly about 5 years ago and am currently vacationing in Wenatchee right now. We have snow, but you just endured a pretty stiff breeze last week. You survived satisfactorily?

(20,678 posts)New? Lots of hysterical typers looking for fights, and endless re-hashing of the 2016 election....
GeorgeHayduke
(1,227 posts)we called the hysterical typers "freepers" and when they trolled us it always made for a fun Saturday night.
Is Free Republic still around? I'm too afraid to look.

(1,227 posts)I would get good and drunk and muster the guts to ply forth the garbage of FR enough to load their home page.
It always seemed like a text-only pre-pubescent attempt at propaganda. And what I really mean is that their site was so technologically rudimentary nobody could navigate anything other than the words Bush, Clinton or Iraq.
I'm literally shuddering right now thinking of it.

(1,227 posts)The Monkeywrench Gang analogy, but you get points for the shout-out. Between Thoreau, Abbey, Leopold and Kerouak I seem to have a little bit in common with almost everyone here.

(1,965 posts)I was always told. When I was a kid, my Dad's parents went to Germany to visit relatives a couple times. Weren't the Germans and the Dutch basically the same at one time?

I know the spelling of my mother's name to be distinctly German, however I admit my etymological expertise to be waning.
Edit to correct spelling. Tapping letters one finger at a time, fat ones at that.
And, yes, the Germans and the Dutch at some point were likely the same, depending on how far back you look. The thing I love about DU is that there is always an expert in just about everything you question and there is always an answer.
Let them come forth and educate us.
Hayduke Bomgarte
(1,965 posts)Could have been "Americanized" at some point. Though I haven't heard that, I know that was a somewhat common practice among early immigrants. I also remember being told, as a kid, that my Dad's Grandparents, on his fathers side came to the States as small children, met years later and married.
BTW the Hayduke is made up. It's a name I borrowed from a novel I read many years ago and just always liked the name.
I use spell check also from typing with sausage fingers.

(36 posts)Your account is still active? I've been gone for a couple years and my account is long gone. I figured it was a cleaning of old account but now I must consider it probably due to the over-sensitivity that has become DU and someone reported a prior post. Well, either way... welcome back!
GeorgeHayduke
(1,227 posts)I tried making a new username assuming the same thing; that my account was so derelect it must have been sent to the great internet moniker disposal in the sky. Then I simply clicked the "lost username" and then "lost password" links and voila!
I wouldn't instantly assume your account was sent to the great digital guillotine betwixt optical fibers deep under the Pacific somewhere. I used to flame and troll and generally be an emotionally undisciplined jerk here. I had some stuff to address outside of DU. If anyone was going to be deleted, it was probably me.
I'm sure your old handle is likely in some liberal limbo somewhere just waiting for you like an unrequited love.

(63,903 posts)I am putting the essays I wrote here all into a book, which my daughter is helping me self publish.
Glad you are back on DU. We need everyone in the fight against this monster, Trump. I am still shaking my head wondering how we got this awful man in the White House. It has shaken my confidence to the core.
I guess we have no choice but to unite and fight back. I'm glad you are back with us in this fight...welcome back!
GeorgeHayduke
(1,227 posts)are you self-publishing? Not that there is anything wrong with it, but you can shop your manuscript around.
Do you have a legit editor?
CTyankee
(63,903 posts)at the time told me that there was a glut on the market of books like mine. So, rather than go that route I decided that at my advanced age why waste my time going from publishing house to publishing house. I didn't really care and here was an opportunity to get it done. My daughter is very talented and could do it, so why not?
I don't have an editor, except her and myself of course. Why do you ask? Just wondering...
GeorgeHayduke
(1,227 posts)I'm really sorry if I offended you. If you've got an inside line, go for it.
I ended-up dating my editor. She ended-up stealing my manuscript. It's an ugly legal pile seen from space. I'll never date again. Nope. Never. Done. Finished.
Don't let me push my problems upon you and, frankly, good luck!
And I'm sooooo sick of this civil legal process and, beyond that, the criminal process too.
