(9,258 posts)We normally spend hours going to all the local you-cut tree farms (there's lots around here) so he can find the "perfect" tree. He did, eventually. That was Sunday and it gets decorated Wed. evening.

(19,459 posts)My wife paid quite a bit for a fake tree that looks very real, and has served us well for over 15 years.
When my kids were little we used to make the annual trip to the tree farm, where they got to choose the tree, and I did the sawing.
Miss those days, mostly because it was always fun with the kids.

We go fake but only if my wife makes me. I would just as soon avoid the trouble all together. Bah Humbug.
At my grandfathers farm, we used to always take the tree out to burn after Christmas. If you ever saw one of those things burn, you would not want one in your house. It is a fire hazard. I can't imagine how many houses were lost when they used to put real candles on the things.

(64,951 posts)Aunt and uncle had a tree fire when i was around 8 (Mid-60's)
My mom and dad decided then to go artificial. So, i became part of that crowd.
My wife and i have never had anything but fake, except for a wreath over the fireplace, and we don't use the fireplace when it's up there. (Well, we barely use the fireplace at all.)

(64,951 posts)We lived about 15 blocks away. My mom called to let them know we were leaving. One of the bulbs popped while my uncle was sitting watching TV. (Remember, this is the early to mid-60's, so we're not talking little italian lights, but the full 4 or 6 watt christmas bulbs).
The tree caught. He jumped up and pulled the extension cord (lucky it was on the side wall and not behind the tree) and ran to the kitchen to get a pail of water. When he got back the living room was wasted. We show up. Picture window busted out, flames coming out the window, and fire department on the way. (Again, lucky, but the FD was 3 blocks from their house.) The overall damage wasn't enormous. No total loss, but certainly ruined their christmas. They had to spend a few nights at our house and then moved back home, with a plywood picture window for a few more days.
Took close to a month before they got the living room back to normal and the piano was never the same after the heat and fire water.
