They pretty much rolled out the disturbing carpet.

Torture with rats, heads on stick, sexual sadism, foot amputations....and those were all put to shame with the "beauty" of childbirth.

Damn, I love that show.

1. Um, child birth is an interesting term for what happened

The show certainly isn't all roses and sunshine; but it is certainly complex, engrossing and nothing like anything else on television.

2. Interestingly Enough, the only scene in the book

was the one with Davos and Melisandre. The Mountain and his pals torture people to death, but not with rats. I guess they couldn't show actual torture on TV - even HBO has its limits - so they did it that way. Gendry wasn't tortured, either. A lot of things were implied in the books, like Joffrey being a sadistic sociopath. But they're actually showing it on screen.

3. So am I forgetting a major plot point

or is that childbirth scene even in the books at all? I'm in Book Four and I swear I don't remember it.

I'm not thrilled with the extreme concentration on torture. If it's part of the plot fine, but they're just making shit up and it shifts the feel of it.

5. I think the parley scene with Stannis and Renly was in the books too.

Only they left out the peach.

7. And while we're complaining, how do you drown someone with a trickle on the forehead???

That was one of the coolest things I've read, the idea that baptism represents rebirth because they actually drown you and pump you back to life. I'm amused at some of the twistings around but that one made me yell at the TV.
