This is one of my favorite renditions of the song.
Heres one variation of the lyrics:
Three o the gypsies came to our hall door
they came brave and boldy, O!
the one sang high and the other sang low
and the other sang a raggle taggle gypsy, O!
it was upstairs, downstairs the lady went,
put on her suit o leather, O!
and it was the cry all around our door
she's away with the raggle taggle gypsy, O!
it was late that night that the lord came in
inquiring for his lady, O!
and the servant girl she says to the lord,
she's away with the raggle taggle gypsy, O!
well saddle for me my milk white steed,
go and fetch my pony, O!
I'm 'a ride, I'm 'a seek my bride,
she's away with the raggle taggle gypsy, O!
well he rode he east, and he rode west,
he rode north and south also,
until he came to a wide open field
it was there that he aspied his lady, O!
tell me how could you leave your goose feather bed,
your blankets strewn so comely, O!
tonight you'll lie in a cold open field
Along with the raggle taggle gypsies, O!
well what care I for my goose feather bed
for my blankets strewn comely, O!
tonight Ill lie in a wide open field
in the arms of my raggle taggle gypsy, O!
tell me how could you leave your house and your land,
how could you leave your money, O!
how could leave your newly wedded lord
all for that raggle taggle gypsy, O!
well what care I for my house and my land
and what care I for money, O!
Id rather have a kiss from my yellow gypsys lips
I'm away with the raggle taggle gypsy, O!

(12,153 posts)Thanks! I'd thought they were Scottish. Since they're from the Netherlands, mr. froggy, who's Dutch, will like them even more. I like the the same as I did, which is a lot.

(7,774 posts)And arent the uilleann pipes wonderful? I want me a set!
I know someone that got some pipes made by a french pipe maker and they were "around 30,000" US dollars 15 years ago- He told me the name and that this was the second to the last set he made but I have forgotten. They were a stunning just sitting there. He wasn't a bad player but he has a lot of gigs to go to pay them off.

(9,726 posts)My mother sang me to sleep with that song many, many times. The words were a bit different, but essentially the same song.

(12,153 posts)your mother sang you to sleep with the song. Thanks for telling us about it. What a great memory it must be for you.
There are numerous lyrics variations. In the traditional version, instead of putting on her leather suit, the lady put on her leather hose. I Googled "leather hose" and all I found were leather hoses for hookahs.
