Looking for synonyms for a character with certain personal traits:

In short, I am looking for a word that would describe someone who uses the access from a long-term friendship to take advantage of the relationship.

Just to give you background, let's start with a childhood friend who was there with you through the first several decades of your life. Shared a great many experiences and laughs. But, as time goes on, behavior that was always there before, just gets worse and you notice that your friend is taking you for granted in an almost hostile manner. They begin to get overly familiar with your possessions and even if they ask for permission to use them, the items come back worse for the wear.

Obviously, if someone were this inconsiderate from the get-go, they would never have had access into your personal circle. But it's the fact that they are now using a long-term friendship as leverage that makes you stop and think, that there has to be one word to describe that kind of behavior.

see his way passed his "manipulations" so he can survive to leech again, but I don't think there's that much forethought.

take your pick..

Opportunist is probably the least "loaded" but it still conveys a negative sense.

I need a word that I can use when the time comes to explain why our friendship went south without sounding vindictive. Opportunist is a good choice.
