Since I live in Florida, I rarely wear gloves. While in Europe I've had to wear them. To do some things I took off a glove.
Do you eventually get so adept in gloves, that you never have to take them off?

(102,141 posts)I wear lighter knitted gloves infused with silver threads for touch screens (e.g., Aglove) until it is REALLY cold
then if it is subzero, I add a deerskin/sherpa fleece lined mitten. Thus, I can do basic things just by pulling off the outer mitten if I have to.
This combo is the best one I ever came up with-even considering a zillion types of ski gloves and mittens I've purchased over the years.

(4,657 posts)Oh, you mean outdoors? It depends on the thickness of the glove. You cant tie a shoelace with heavy gloves on.

(1,704 posts)unless I'm going to be out quite awhile. I can't think of anything I need to do that can't be done with gloves on. Except when I smoked, I couldn't light my cigarette with gloves on.

(62,444 posts)Are we talking about cycling in cold weather, skiing on a sunny day, doing needlepoint in a blizzard at 20 degrees, shoveling snow, driving, surprising my wife in bed.... whats it like out and what are you planning to do?
Its not like one owns one pair of all purpose gloves for every condition or anticipated activity.
Ive never had a pair of the supposedly touch screen compatible ones, and Im out in the cold a lot, so I take them off a lot for that.
But if you are talking about handling something thats been outside - a gate latch, a steering wheel, your frozen solid cat which didnt come in last night - just about anything thats been out there is going to suck the heat right out of your hands when you grab it, so you only take your gloves off, briefly, if you really have to. Then you cup and exhale into them as needed, and before putting your gloves back on.

(37,457 posts)It's cool some gloves work with touchscreens.

(62,444 posts)I dont use these to shovel snow, but mainly because they have a wind resistant shell:

How cold, what are you planning to do (or might end up having to do), is it windy, is it wet, how long has it been cold, how long might you be out - all of those factor in to what gloves you might want.
Granted, you could have some winter gloves you use for just general purpose its cold outside weather, but even that varies among folks.

(115,615 posts)The thinner the gloves, the more manual dexterity you'll have, but they will not be warm. You'll have to take any kind of gloves off altogether to tie your shoes or pick up small objects. Some gloves have fingertips that are conductive so you can text, but these are not warm. If you're going to be outside for awhile, wear mittens; they are warmer than gloves. For driving, get a pair of gloves with leather palms so they won't be slippery on the steering wheel. Driving gloves don't have to be as warm because you'll be inside the car, but you should have a warmer pair of gloves or mittens with you in case you get stuck in the snow or have to be outside for awhile.

Guess I should get a star membership, so I can conduct a poll to see if anyone stores gloves in a glove compartment.

(4,492 posts)Now there's touchscreen capable gloves.
I have a few pairs (with cats on them) that are thin but they're great. Flexible for driving and can use my phone.
I also don't get cold easily.

(25,150 posts)It was all about survival. (I even drove in mittens)
Of course, this was 40-50 years ago and no one had a cell phone.
