I know Mclain Stevenson, Col. Potter, Father Mulcahy are deceased.
It's too sad to lose more and more of these cast members. Stiers was such fun...
Each death of these great cast members seems like a blow.
We used to watch reruns just to get the "old feeling" back of that series...

(3,427 posts)One of my favorite characters from the earlier episodes, although he wasn't exactly a "regular."

In a recent interview with the master, Alan, I was surprised to hear he had any involvement in writiing or directing any of the first 3 seasons, I knew about subsequent seasons
Two Episode 5: "Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde" Written with Robert Klane
Episode 23: "Mail Call" Directed
Three Episode 16: "Bulletin Board" Directed
He said he never ONCE thought about politics in any of the shows he wrote, even though he was simultaneously very involved in the ERA movement.
No matter how you cut it, the show was AMAZINGLY funny and dramatic at the same time....
psst...secret, I have a friend who had a guest star role on an episode...

(31,109 posts)I asked him what was Ed like in real life, said he was kinda caustic but not too bad and that Christina was a sweetheart and very nice.

(16,858 posts)My favorite episode from those early seasons is Sometimes You Hear the Bullet.
If it had not been for the characters of Hawkeye, Trapper, and BJ....I doubt Id be a surgeon today. Such an amazing show! And jealous that your friend was in a cameo!!
(Edit...that show is also why Im an unabashed liberal!)

(31,109 posts)I think if you were to meet Alan Alda and tell him that it would make his day. Although he would say that he was only trying to entertain, not educate.
My friend recalls Alan going out of his way to welcome him, a nobody so to speak, when he arrived on set.

(16,858 posts)Ive often thought about trying to reach out to Alda. Not only am I a surgeon but Im a combat surgeon that served at a forward hospital in Afghanistan. I literally operated in crappy conditions and lived in my own SWAP, for seven months, minus the sweet Still!
Im fully aware that Hawkeye is a character and not Alda himself, but his personification and bedside manner influenced me significantly, same for Mike Ferrell as BJ.
It might be totally naive, but I think they might appreciate hearing of the impact they had...
