Amazon Working on a Fix for Alexa Devices Scaring Users With Creepy Laughter

For the past couple of weeks, speakers equipped with Amazon's Alexa voice-based personal assistant have been randomly laughing, scaring and creeping out speaker owners who have affected devices.

Complaints have been surfacing on Twitter, Reddit, and other social media platforms over the course of the last few weeks, but the issue started receiving widespread attention this week after it was shared on BuzzFeed. From Reddit:

A friend of mine at work just a couple of days ago told me this very thing happened at his moms house. He was face timing with his her(he jokes she is jealous of Alexa, his dad just loves it) and out of the blue in the background Alexa started to laugh, he even heard it on his end. Said it was super creepy. I'm waiting the have the holy hell scared out of me one quiet evening...or even worse, awakened by the one a foot from my head while I'm sleeping.

this happened to me about 2 weeks ago! my gf left the amazon alexa on playing music for our dog (don't get me started) unbeknownst to me. Here I get home (she's at work) and the Alexa is playing, "odd" I thought. Now, not much really creeps me out but...I say "alexa, off", it shuts off and then... AND THEN....it fucking giggles/laughs at me. WTF???? It gave me fucking goose bumps. I tried to make it do it again and nothing. I googed that you can make alexa make random laughs so I did that and none of them sounded like the fucking creepy laugh/giggle.

I feel a lot better now after reading this. Fuck!

on edit: I have always hated the fucking alexa thing.

2. Alexa is laughing because it's logging everything you say, to be used

against you, probably in a court of law. Who wants a listening device listening in on every damn thing you say?

3. I hate the thing. I never use it. I usually swear at it. I turn the mic off and my gf

wonders why it doesn't work.

I won't have one in my house, but I cannot imagine how freaking creeped out I'd be if an electronic devise just started laughing (or singing, or humming, etc.) out of nowhere.

I don't usually get spooked easily, but that is something that could be made into a horror flick.
