R.I.P. Gary Burden, album artist for Neil Young's "Goldrush," CSNY's "Deja Vu," and many more

Gary Burden, whose artwork graced the covers of many albums by artists associated with the California singer-songwriter movement of the '70s, most famously Neil Young, has died. He was 84. No cause of death was given.

Young broke the news on the website for his archives. Calling him a "friend for life" and "always the most handsome man in the room," Young said that he first worked with Burden on 1970's After the Gold Rush, and his association continued to the present, creating the covers for his two newest projects, Paradox and Roxy: Tonight's the Night Live.

"I still have some covers for unreleased albums that we made together," he wrote. "They are coming, We probably made 40 covers. I lost count."

Young also shared a passage from his 2012 autobiography, Waging Heavy Peace, that detailed their work together on the cover for 1974's On the Beach. Burden and Young, along with Burden's wife Jenice Heo, won a Grammy in 2010 for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Packaging for Neil Young the Archives Vol. 1 1963–1972.

After the Gold Rush by Neil Young - Album Cover Location

The photo was taken by photographer Joel Bernstein, most likely sometime in early 1970, as the album came out in August of that year.

In the book: Shakey: Neil Young's Biography ((c) 2002, Random House) author Jimmy McDonough writes that Bernstein, 18-years-old at the time, was "shocked" that Neil chose that photo for the cover. Bernstein described it as an "accidental shot" of Neil walking through Greenwich Village (during an outdoor photo session) and he even "solarized the print in order to hide its soft focus."

(Below: a special photo sent to PopSpots from Joel Bernstein: the original uncropped picture - which includes Graham Nash. More on this in the addendum following the web entry.)

Went to the link and read the entire thing.

Amazing how a simple idea (Neil walking down the street) became so iconic, sort of like an American Abbey Road, which also featured four guys, just walking.
