and it would generate the number clicks if you "dialed" it.

But there was no "dial tone", you just picked it up and if no one was talking you said "I'd like to dial Melrose 2876 please" or something like that.

Less than a year or so later our line was attached to the new automated switch that Southwestern Bell installed.

The operator counted the dings to know what was inserted. A little bell could fool them. Yes delinquent.

You could could just hang up the phone about medium-hard...not slam it, but just hang up with a little force...and every time you did it, a few coins would drop into the coin return.

You do that for an hour, you could get a pretty good chunk of change.

We worked that thing for about a week before old Ma Bell caught on.
