When I was in the area I visited this place, Belle Meade Plantation (https://bellemeadeplantation.com/). They had a winery there where I bought the best bottle of white wine I've ever tasted: Carriage House White.
Also presidential museums are always fascinating to visit: https://www.clintonlibrary.gov/

(16,166 posts)I've been to the Clinton library. I'm rolling on I 65 and I 22 as much as possible. The country/back roads make for bad driving with my wife.

(34,136 posts)231 is four lanes most of the way, has a good bypass around Dothan and will take you straight to I-65 at Montgomery though you might want to take 80 for the last leg - check on traffic and construction.
If you want to stop early in your trip the Marianna Caverns are a nice place to visit, especially when it's hot - you might want a jacket or sweater to wear in the caverns.
South of Birmingham is Oak Mountain State Park - nice place to picnic and a lovely view along the drive to the top of the mountain. http://www.alapark.com/oak-mountain-state-park
In the NE part of Birmingham is Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, kind of a neat place to visit but more out of the way. https://ruffnermountain.org/

Have fun!
