I survived ten months of homelessness.
Now I can get on with life. It's amazing how traumatic it was and how transitioning back to seems so strange.

(182,613 posts)You probably have some stories.

(86,330 posts)Yeah, I have some stories alright, but most I'd rather not recall.
It feels good to wake up in my apartment with all my things and a kitchen and bathroom all indoors.
Now the search is on for another vehicle, my old girl of a Toyota was due for replacement two summers ago.

(508 posts)I do hope you will share the stories. I am sure most of us would learn quite a bit from your experiences.

(86,330 posts)I already had ptsd so that is one thing I'm working on now that things have changed.
I learned to be a survivor when I was a toddler so I had that going for me even though there's not much in the way of pretty about it.
I think that the worst thing and biggest thing to understand is that women never get shelter outside of a service without enduring sexual harassment nearly constantly. I was only offered a "couch" by people who wanted a slave in their home.

(86,330 posts)It will take a little time to transition back from going "feral".
I'm sure it's hard to imagine what it's like wondering where I can relieve myself or safely park for the night. I existed on roughly $100 - 200 amonth whick mostly went for gas.
The only advice I can offer is to keep every piece of paper, check all info and don't trust anyone on anything. You have to hound everyone claiming to assist you to make sure you don't get screwed, the services don't communicate unless they want to bust you for something... then they're all about inter-communication.

(86,330 posts)It was horrible and living in a 4Runner the whole time while in my 60s with a messed up back and feet.
At least I only had to appeal my disability claim once so it only took ten months. It was the five years after trashing my spine yet having to continue working until Montna got Medicaid so I could get a diagnosis from a 2012 work injury that started this whole mess.
Consequently, I am now officially retired... and very thankful.

(29,617 posts)My gawd 2naSalit........hope youre back. Damn.
Ten ugly-demon-nightmare-months-from (actually in) -hell. All while sweating out a disability claim that was accepted last month, three weeks after going indoors.
The hoop jumping was constant and onerous. I have an advanced degree in public admin and it had me so frustrated with all the BS that I was near to jumping from a cliff at times. If it is that hard for me, I can't imagine what it's like for less informed folks.
Montana has nothing, really, beyond SNAP & Medicaid for anything resembling a safety net. It's no wonder that the suicide rate is so high in this state.

(31,374 posts)I can imagine it was horribly traumatic. Since the weather has turned warmer I now see people early in the morning when I'm out walking the dog who have been sleeping on street benches. Mostly men.
It burns me up that there is so much homelessness in this country. I am truly happy for you that you are no longer among them.

(86,330 posts)Iwasn't typical inthat I have a vehicle and relied on it for shelter and mobility. I am very thankful to at least have had that.

(86,330 posts)My main issue is replacing the vehicle. Seems my student loan, even though I'm in good stead, prohibit my CU from approving ant loans. This would be my third auto loan with them!
Not only that, just yesterday I learned that I can have my student loans "dicharged" ...but it's a three year process.
So now it's yet another climb up a tall, pitch-coved tree w/little protective gear for my hair... it's like that with every phone call lately.
I wonder if it's easier or better to look into leasing.

(86,330 posts)It was hard but I also knew that there people sending vibes the whole time.
Now thinks are getting better daily, even when faced with ongoing hassles. I can stop myself and remember what a blessing this new situation is.
I've missed being on DU, mymost consistent and large social group.

(204,779 posts)And to know that you're safe and that things are looking up for you. And I know very well very well how easy it is to get aggravated and frustrated by everyday hassles. But I belong to AA, have for going on 10 years, and I represent the beginners who remind me every day to have gratitude. I try not to forget that...

(86,330 posts)Ball of wax right there, try to remain calm and remember to be thankful for what you do have... and take diligent and purposeful action to better the situation (s).
I did fine with the gratitude and diligence parts, the remain calm part was come and go.

(58,601 posts)I was lucky to have family in the area to couch surf with for 2-4 years. Finally found some work and lived for a year renting a room in a shithole house made worse by being run by RW idiots. Fox News on all day.
Glad your life is looking up. Best wishes going forward.

(86,330 posts)Miserable. Not that close with mine and I couldn't survive where they live anyway. They did help by paying my car ins and a few things like that.
