The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsA gourmet chef was at the house tonight and cooked the following meal
Wild greens salad with a light lemon olive oil dressing topped by shavings of Gruyère cheese from Switzerland.
Filet of Norwegian Skrei cod poached in a mixture of olive oil, Hungarian paprika powder, vegetable broth and mustard, topped by a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Thrown into the broth/sauce were lightly sautéed zucchini quarters and white onions plus some wild local herbs.
Accompanied by some sautéed potatoes done with minced onion bits.
Cost was about $7 per person, but it all tasted like a thousand times that.
It helps to be married to the chef.
Dessert, when I am able to handle more food, will be slices of fresh strawberries and mango, dusted with Canadian maple syrup.
If anyone is in the neighborhood and wants to drop in, I promise you, you will not go away hungry.

You are most fortunate to be married to such a superb chef!

(54,330 posts)She really does manage to throw together meals like that in no time flat.
One time, a friend of ours was over for dinner because it was his 70th birthday, and his wife was traveling. He marveled at the meal my wife put together, and told me wow, I bet you don't eat like THAT every night. I had to correct him: "well, actually, yes I do." My wife said, "oh, that's no big deal. I didn't have time to prepare something fancy." What's fancy to most mortals is routine to her. Amazing but true! You will see for yourselves!

We do try to eat responsibly!

(54,330 posts)OK, maybe you need to reroute--don't come within 500 miles of here. Danger! Danger!

(149,564 posts)We don't overeat or waste and eat lots of fresh vegetables, fruits and etc. That's all I mean.

(54,330 posts)On a par with fresh same-day caught cod on Cape Cod, and that's saying something!

(41,757 posts)We probably would have eaten them if we had.
I also sailed on Norwegian research vessels in the Antarctic - but we never had this.
And I camped out n the Lofoten Islands in Norway - didn't' see this on any menus.
Those mischievous Norwegians are keeping this to themselves!

(54,330 posts)Our local fish shop here has some arrangement with a few boats that fish between Iceland and Norway. The ocean perch (Rotbarsch) and skrei we get here are always great.
jpak
(41,757 posts)I've had that!
Yum

(54,330 posts)It doesn't seem to be offered much in North America. It's pretty common here in northern Europe. I've seen it called "ocean perch," but only in a text, never on a menu.

(54,330 posts)Except that this being Europe and all, people walk or take bicycles everywhere. Saves the Europeans from all looking like Haystacks Calhoun.
From your description, my imagination led me to almost tasting the deliciousness. Thank you!

(37,457 posts)She made some great meals while I was with the DFW's. I hope you and MrsDFW are doing well. I wish I could come back to Germany now that it's warming up, but it will be a while before I can do it. Going to 7 different countries (including my airport stop in Zurich) in 25 days kinda ruined my budget but I have great memories, including my time with you and MrsDFW.

(54,330 posts)You trip did indeed seem like a budget-buster, but you saw a LOT and probably have memories to fill a two volume memoir.
And you can attest to Peggy about the quality of our little Greek place just up the street!
