The last final is taken and school has ended

In my town, the 8th grade is in the high school building, which means when my daughter started there I got to do a fun little speech to lighten the mood on the drive down.

I worked a variant of the Star Trek five year mission about what her high school life would be. She remembered that more than I expected as it came up recently.

While her graduation isn't for two weeks or so, today was her last final and therefore her last class. When I picked her up I worked the five year mission piece again.

Over the five year mission she's gone to strange new places, met lots of new people and explore a great number of cultures. She's survived a lot of things that she had to deal with and has come out stronger for it. She's made me proud beyond words and has eased my soul in knowing that while there will always be struggles - we all always have struggles - she will be just fine in this world going forward.

In the fall, she begins her new multi-year mission as she's being reassigned to a new Starfleet academy, Quinsigamond college, in order to work through the basics before really going all in on her main focus of psychology.

And when she finishes that, she'll begin the new open-ended mission out into the world with so much to explore and engage in. And, most importantly, she'll boldy go OUT OF MY HOUSE!

Thankfully, she laughed at that part as I laughed too!

What a good parent you are. I love the Star Trek analogy. Very well done. Fla Dem May 2018 #3

It was fun to do the little speech with her with the light touches of the "mission" and all and then end with a boisterous "And get out of my house!" moment. We both laughed at that.

The nervousness of what a new high school would be like, being at the bottom rung once again, and just anxiety in general. Was a great way to bring a bit of levity into things on the ride there.
