At an 85th birthday party for a mutual friend in 2009, I saw a woman across the room whom I was SURE I knew. We kept staring at each other, and I finally went up to her and said, "you look incredibly familiar, but I just can't place you." She said practically the same thing to me. She told me her name, and I ha never heard of her, She had never heard of me, either. We had a good laugh and parted ways. Later on that evening I found out she was some kind of well-known singer-songwriter. The I REALLY felt like an idiot, since I was the only one in the whole place who had no idea who she was. Guys like Tom Paxton, Peter Yarrow and Arlo Guthrie were all patting her on the back like old friends, and here we were, just positive we knew each other from somewhere. oops.

As for the comment in the OP, I just say, oh, you must be confusing me with my evil twin brother.
