It will finally get cold enough in the next few days and weeks that I'll be thinking of pulling out my crockpot. Aldi had pork sirloin roast on sale last week for $1.99 per pound. I had too much stuff in the refrigerator already to take on any more. It'll be back. Also, it came in sizes that I could finish it before it went bad.

I could see leaving that pork in the crockpot all day, with a bunch of veggies, potatoes, stewed tomatoes,....

I'm going to enjoy my first fresh acorn squash of the season tonight.

The trick to good acorn squash is to pick them small before they're fully ripe. Or if you're buying them at the store, choose the smallest ones you can find. The outside skin should be a dark green, but you don't eat that anyway. Slice them in half, scoop out the seeds and lay the squash face down in a baking dish in about 1 inch of water. Then put the dish in the pre-heated oven and bake at 350 degrees for about an hour. Start checking them after they've been in for about 45 minutes. You want them soft like a baked potato but not mushy. Also they shouldn't be stringy either, if you've selected small, young squash.

Dump the water, put the squash on your plate or individual bowls. Butter, salt, pepper and a shake of cinnamon on top, and eat it like a baked potato. Yum!
