Universal Orlando questions

I haven't been there since probably the early to mid 90s. So, I know things have changed since then...the big attraction was a King Kong ride where he'd shake the cart you're driving in and Harry Potter wasn't even on JK Rowling's radar.

1) There are two parks now - one with Harry Potter and one with the superhero stuff. Are both parks do-able in one day apiece? Or, do you need more/less time? We'd be two adults and one 9 year old. I ask because Universal has a special now that includes a 3 day pass and wasn't sure if there is enough for 3 days.

2) If you avoid Disney, I know there is Sea World. What are some other attractions that can occupy a day?

If we went for a week, I see two days at universal and one day at Sea World... but, without Disney, what else?

Thanks

That would take at least one day, and you might want to go back for another half day.

My kids (youngest 9 at the time) enjoyed the rest of Universal, The Men In Black Ride, Jurassic Park, even Dr Seuss.

If you go you'll enjoy yourself.

What are you thinking? Don't politicize this. The kid will be thrilled with Disney World.

I know it's staggering expensive. DO IT.

Stay for the fireworks. Tinkerbell flies around the castle. No really. She does.

Definitely spring for the rope walk works add-on. The Italian place next door is a tad pricey but worth IT. And there is a parking garage right next to the place. Go down(or up) the stairs and check out the illusion paintings. Remember the rope adventure is in the attic...which is...well. The snacks here aren't too badly priced either. But save your appetite for the Italian Place next door! lol!

Many people save money to travel abroad. We saved money to do the Harry Potter attraction the right way. And we live in the area.

1) Get hotel accommodations at the Royal Pacific Resort. Not only will you be picked up by water taxi to be dropped off at Universal, but you'll be allowed entrance into the place an hour earlier than everybody else. You can also get in an hour early if you go to any of their other hotels.

2) If it's a busy time of the year, the lines are loooong. At peak times the Harry Potter attraction stops allowing people into HP world. You have to wait in line outside the attraction and they hand out tickets to make sure nobody jumps the line. This could have changed in the last couple of years. If you stay at one of the Universal hotels and are allowed entrance an hour earlier, that solves this problem.

3) Once you get into the Harry Potter resort, go straight to the three broomsticks and see if you need to put in a reservation for dinner. If it's crowded, it will only be available through reservations at dinner time. (The last couple of times we went we didn't need reservations.)

4) Make sure you get your tickets from Universal, unless you understand the ticket situation. There are outlets outside of Universal that sell them at a discount rate. But if you check off that you will pick it up at the window, you might lose an hour when you realize that it's not the Universal window they're talking about.

we might go in a few weeks - before school is out, so hopefully the lines won't be too bad.

a lot of packages include breakast at the 3 Broomsticks

There is also a package that allows you to get a pass where you can skip ahead in the line (sort of like a Disney Fast Pass)

Yes, that's helpful. If you've never been, it will take your breath away. Dress for warm weather and don't be above buying a fanny pack so you don't have to waste time at the lockers.

We went a couple of years ago, and stayed at the Hard Rock. Best decision we made. Big rooms, no driving, no parking lot, no designated driver. If it gets too hot in the middle of the day, take a break and go back to your room for a couple of hours, then go out again.

Universal is much better than Disney, especially if your child is tall enough to get on most of the rides.

It is an hours drive to the east. There are even tours from Orlando that go over.

Check out some of the other traditional old Florida attractions, your hotel will have a kiosk loaded with ideas. If you are driving down stop at the visitors centers located just after you cross the state lines, they can find you all kinds of things to do.

We have been to Florida many times and still have no problems filling a week with things to do.

The beach there is gorgeous and people can see a little of what that part of the Florida coast used to be before the development.

The birdwatching this time of year isn't as good as in the winter but there should be some interesting birds anyway.

Islands of Adventure is my favorite of those but I love roller coasters. The best thrill rides are there.
I haven't been since Harry Potter opened but a day is probably enough to hit all the rides you want IF it isn't ridiculously crowded. Weekdays are best, naturally. a three day pass could give you a day and a half at each and that would be plenty.

We had a season pass to Sea World a few years ago but I got bored after two times...My wife took our granddaughters several times during the summer though so they got some use out of it. I've heard it's dull since they don't let the trainers in with the whales now and, frankly, the more I hear about how the whole thing works the less interested I am in seeing these animals in captivity. One or two good rides and a bunch of kid stuff. A 9 year old will probably love it though.

But, to me, the Magic Kingdom is the best of them all by far (Even considering the best roller coasters ar at IoA). My grandparents took me there the second year it was open and I have been a fan ever since. Now I get to take my grandkids.

HOWEVER - the best theme park restaurant in Orlando is Mythos at Islands of Adventure. http://www.universalorlando.com/Restaurants/Islands-of-Adventure/Mythos.aspx
Get reservations. It's worth the wait.

Universal CityWalk is a shopping area outside of the theme parks and includes an Emeril's restaurant. BAM! It's great food - but pricey. Also should have reservations.

You (or at least the kid) might enjoy a day at Kennedy Space Center. They still do stuff out there but it's pretty sciency/space related and some kids are bored by it. My granddaughters aren't very interested in it....on the plus side it's right by the beach. Check the schedule to see if there is a launch during your time here - those are always pretty incredible.

If you like Water Parks there's a Wet-N-Wild in the tourist area near Universal. You can spend a day there but bring sunscreen.

So I think I can answer your questions. My son is 8, and he has SO outgrown Disney, so we had the same concerns. However, we didn't venture outside of Universal for other things to do, but that was because we also had to schedule time to visit grandma, who lives in Apopka.

Our vacay lasted six days: 1) travel day (got there in the early evening, so just enough time to check into the hotel, have dinner, and crash), 2) Universal Studios, 3) Islands of Adventure, 4) lazy day/pool/visiting grandma, 5) exotic car show/more visiting grandma; 6) travel day.

We got the two-day pass and did Universal Studios one day and Islands of Adventure the next. How long you spend at each park--determining whether you do 'em both in one day or one each day--depends on several factors.

- Are you staying at a Universal hotel? If you are, you can get into the Harry Potter thing an hour before the park opens (otherwise fondly know as "at the crack o' freakin' dawn&quot . And when you kick the Harry Potter thing before 9 a.m., you got a whole lotta time on your hands for the rest of the day.

- Will you be splurging on a FastPass? That will cut down on how long you're standing in line, which takes up huge chunks o' time. (Note: FastPass not honored for the Harry Potter rides but is valid for everything else in both parks.)

- Does your kid like rollercoasters? If he does, that's a whole lotta line-standing right there. My son doesn't care for them, so that helped.

- The heat. Sometimes, especially with a young kid, even if you WANT to do both parks in one day, you just get wiped out by the weather, and you might choose to spend a few hours at one of the parks in the morning and then the rest of the day at the hotel pool.

Most important advice: If you don't get early access to Harry Potter, then get there as early as humanly possible, before the park opens even, and stand in line. The lines at HP are STUPID LONG and get longer and stupider as the day goes on. But it is SOOOOO worth it.

As soon as you get into the park, make a beeline for Hogwarts (at the far end of the place, just for fun). Follow the racing crowds (best to go through the Dr. Seuss section, as it's the least populated). Get in line for Ollivander's wand shop IMMEDIATELY. They only let 27 people in the place at one time for a brief but VERY charming performance by Mr. Ollivander and a child selected from the audience. Buy stuff at the gift shop as soon as possible, because the crowds are insane afterward. If you're staying at a Universal hotel, have the loot sent to your room so you don't have to lug it all over the park.

After Ollivander's, get in line for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (the one inside Hogwarts). Early on the line is long but moves at a fast clip. Later on the line is even longer and does NOT move at a fast clip. Buy stuff at the gift shop it vomits you into at the end. Worth it if you like HP loot.

Do everything else in the park at your leisure.

At Universal Studios, definitely do the Simpsons ride, DEFINITELY the Men in Black ride (OMG we did that one twice) and the moviemaking simulator (it's cute--not as much fun as Universal California, but fun in a limited space).

If you have any other questions, fire away!

It was fine. Some good bits, some bad bits. It was crazy expensive, but we went during spring break (right after Easter). Prices should be better now. If you stay at the RP, know the restaurants in the hotel are all right but cost a friggin' fortune. If you can eat elsewhere, do so. Highlight of the RP: the family of ducks that swims in the pool before it gets invaded by hoomins (heck, they take dips even when there ARE people in the pool). Bottom line: you can't beat the convenience, especially the early admission and the three-minute water taxi ride to the parks.

On edit: This is MG Jr. in all his bleary glory, 7:30 a.m., standing in line for Ollivander's. We decided to take pictures of us standing in line at every ride, but most of the time everything was stashed in a locker and I always forgot to pull out my phone before locking everything up.

Mostly because it is a very easy walk from there to Citywalk and the theme parks. You can take the water taxi but you really don't have to. The Portofino and Royal Pacific are both nice hotels but it is a bit too far to walk, you really need to take the water taxis from there.
