I called a local Chinese Restaurant and asked if I can order whole Steamed Crab for dinner. The owner told me if I can call on Wednesday before hand they will get one for me. One year, I tried to order and the waitress told me it was "Out of season". I asked the owner if that was the case and he had said they were fresh out, so I ended up ordering Peking Duck, which was really, really good. But My favorite dish is Dungeness Crab, and so I have stashed away some cash, and will call that Wednesday, and see about getting a wonderful Crab dinner. Its so good to have a great Chinese restaurant near by, if you like that sort of thing!
For those of you who have never had Dungeness Crab, its kinda like sweet Maine Lobster...but there is far more meat inside.. it takes a nutcracker and small fork to work out the meat, but its just perfect dipped in Melted Lemon Butter... just like Lobster. OMG! It makes a great soup, if there are any leftovers, and there is so much, there will be!

(41,831 posts)Chinese Restaurant up in Inverness, a small town in the North of Scotland. That place saved me from having to try Haggis which I don't regret at all. In a video about the History of Chinese in this Country, many of them moved out to the Midwest and to the East out from San Francisco. There are too many here to count in San Francisco, but even in the South West and East Coast now there are millions of Chinese families who have started serving Chinese food. Its hard not to find a Restaurant, even in Rural towns like Mexico, Missouri. I would say check google and see if there is not a Chinese restaurant in your area. If You find it, go explore and try the food yourself.
Believe me, its better than eating from cans of "CHung King" which claims to be Chinese but is run by a Caucasian who thinks he knows what Asian food tastes like.. bleh.

(130,860 posts)within 70 miles of DC, but they're just that, mediocre! Others in the past were better.
INTERESTING you found one in Inverness! I didn't, but wasn't looking for one at the time! I didn't bother with haggis!

(41,831 posts)is often times, due to customer reaction, owners will go out and find really great cooks and teach them to prep food and serve it in the traditional Chinese fashion. A place that might have been mediocre a few years back may have earned 5 stars recently, due to management changes! I would say go check them out! There are so many different kinds of Chinese restaurants depending on the area the owner came from. I have even seen Hong Kong and Peking Restaurants both different in what they serve. If you like spicy hot than try to find a Sichuan restaurant known for their hot and spicy dishes! Juju and I both love hot dishes, and there is always a bottle of Sriracha near by on our tables!

(54,330 posts)It's a Thursday and not a holiday here. As a rare exception, I know already a week in advance where I'll be: Geneva, Switzerland. That Friday, in the morning, I have to run down to Stuttgart for an hour, but plan to be back by 4 PM, since we have 20 Europeans coming over for our version of Thanksgiving. They are coming from Austria, the Netherlands, and various parts of Germany. We'll all eat way too much as usual, and the company will be fabulous, as usual.

(54,330 posts)Besides, I may have to try to squeeze in Bern between meetings and flights.
But our dinners are always great, and our new granddaughter will be there for the first time, even though she is just a little bit young (6 months) to really grasp what's going on. Still, given the genius level of her parents, she may surprise us all by coming out with a coherent word or two some four months or so before Mother Nature says she should be able to.
ありがとうございます !!

(41,831 posts)or someone bringing out the Ham dinner, which I don't eat, is kind of boring. So I go with what Asians like to eat when celebrating. They often go with Peking duck which is just succulent and rich with flavor, but I thought, I did that last year...I wanta do something special and since my favorite dish in the entire world is Dungeness Crab (Also a kind of San Francisco symbol! You see it at Fisherman's wharf..!!)
(Yup that's a crab in the center of the sign!!)
Its also my favorite dish, and I often have it on my birthday, but why not on a holiday! Yay!

(41,831 posts)the best place to get high end seafood is Scoma's. There is one at 1965 Al Scoma Way (So famous, the have their own road!) or you could check out Sam's Grill & Seafood Restaurant 374 Bush St, San Francisco, CA, (they have been around since 1867!!) and have some of the best seafood in the city. If you like Chinese, in the sunset is Riverside Seafood Restaurant 1201 Vicente street, serve excellent Chinese seafood! In Chinatown, where the prices maybe a little bit higher is the Great Eastern Restaurant 649 Jackson St in the city! Some great eats in the city if you know where to look.

(10,125 posts)Dungenous Crab Cocktail.
I think i read a post a while ago that indicated u were in SF. If not, my bad. The Dungeoness cocktail is still solid there though. . Great starter for the cioppino, which is also pretty good there.

(41,831 posts)but if I am going out, I would start with Steamed clams, to be followed by Crab!
Had this at Sam's Grill,(address mentioned above) because they really make you feel special when you go there. Who else, gives you an entire loaf of Sour dough bread before your meal, (and you can take it to go, if you wish!) that is if you don't eat it all. I usually need room for the good stuff so i get a to-go bag for the bread and tabs of real butter.
