in the country to get Netflix??
I'm asking for you to share your favorites/recommendations so I can catch up, which most likely isn't possible. We started with Ozark; the format so reminds me of The Sopranos. You watch, find out what the story line is all about, then BAM! Except the start of it hooked us. Bam! Bam!
I will soon get rid of the dreaded cable so will also be looking at sling. These two combined with the wifi will still be cheaper than the rip-off I'm paying for.
Thanks!

(34,095 posts)I love Jonathan Groff and I too also read the book. I have not gotten real far with it yet, it is like pulling teeth to get my husband to watch episodes but eventually we will get through it. It is well done and interesting.

(43,888 posts)Some of the scenes with Cameron Britton's portrayal of Ed Kemper are asphyxiating in their realism.
I still get goosebumps from his powerful performance.

(6,454 posts)but I feel it is worth the money as free shipping is included and a few other features. Some movies are rental, however I only rent if it is under five dollars and if I think the movie is worth the extra money.

I also have Amazon Prime. Lots of movies I can really like.

(12,152 posts)Been wanting to try Hulu, so this special may push me over the edge. The Handmaid's Tale series they did is excellent (so far -- I've seen only the ones available on DVD from the library), so that alone will make it worthwhile for us.

(38,303 posts)A single stream of SD (Standard Definition) Netflix works fine for us, but maybe it's because we're not fussy. It seems about equivalent to DVD quality, and better than video cassettes. (Yes, we still have a video cassette player...)
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87
Our router is set up to give Netflix priority. If anyone else in the house tries to watch internet video while my wife and I are watching Netflix on the big television, they're out of luck.
We don't have cable, satellite, or broadcast television, just the inexpensive DSL connection and Netflix.
Other than that we watch DVDs we mostly find in thrift stores, or rent from the RedBox in our neighborhood grocery store.

(10,122 posts)Can get it really cheap as a second on my daughter's account.
Found it hard to find a movie on it I wanted to see that I had not seen.

(12,152 posts)- Schitt's Creek (hilariously silly)
- Godless (violent and intense western, worth it for Jeff Daniels alone)
- Shetland (detective series set in the Shetland Islands -- use subtitles for help with the Scottish accents!)
- Grace and Frankie (hilarious series with Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston, and Martin Sheen
- Deadwind (murder mystery mini-series set in Finland -- you'll need subtitles)
- Designated Survivor (well-done political thriller -- only watched 3 episodes, but so far so good)
- River (Surreal psychological police detective thriller)
- Sky Ladder (fascinating documentary about Chinese pyrotechnic artist Cai Guo-Qiang)
- 13th (important political documentary about how the American "justice" system continues to screw Black people)
One of my major complaints about Netflix is that it's often hard to find specific movies I'm looking for, and something that's available one month will be gone the next. But they do have a lot, including TV series you may have missed the first time around, like The I.T. Crowd, Better Call Saul, Portlandia, and so on. And they have Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, which for me is a great diversion when the Reality TV (p)residency gets to be too much.

(171,035 posts)And you must read fast?
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,606 posts)especially the Scandinavian ones. I also liked Norsemen, which is sort of The Vikings meets Monty Python. Subtitles don't bother me (Icelandic is so wordy that you have enough time to read them; it sounds like a Martian trying to speak Norwegian) but some people don't like them so I mentioned the shows that have them.

(9,657 posts)I'd recommend this Coen brothers movie I saw last week: "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs".
Six western-themed short stories that in my view, get better as they go along. Very good, well crafted and the period dialogue stands out too, IMO.

(17,252 posts)The first is a marvelous period piece about an independent woman living in Melbourne in the 20s or so. And the second stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlinson and is just a marvelous and terribly funny show.

(779 posts)Black Mirror (on Netflix) was mentioned upthread. I second that. Plausible, near future scenarios that make you think. Sometimes they turnout badly for the characters, but sometimes there's a happy ending.
With Hulu, you get most of your regular network TV shows, sitcoms, etc. I recommend the combo.

(37,984 posts)Netflix has a lot so take your time and don't stress out because there's plenty there. It's not complete. It's not live nor does it carry first-run episodes of shows from networks. Netflix's original programs are for the most part, pretty decent. The site's search and suggestion filters are terrible and kind of upselly.
I go to https://flixable.com/ to search for new releases and https://instantwatcher.com/ to search by genre/category.

(2,682 posts)a favorite for sheer outrageousness is the Australian series Rake. Its about the life and blunders of an attorney operating just this side of ethical propriety. Just when you think he cant fuck up any worse, he does. Its currently in its fifth season. Overall, he is a lovable screwball.
