DU Album of the Day: "Songs for Young Lovers" Frank Sinatra
He's been gone 14 years today, but Frank Sinatra still casts a long shadow over popular music. Before any of the Justins, before American Idol, before Leif and David and Bobby, before the Beatles, heck, even before Elvis, it was Frankie Sinatra, the kid from Hoboken, New Jersey with the golden pipes.
This album, Sinatra's first on the Capitol label, showcases the Sinatra sound and the Sinatra style. Sinatra's smooth, effortless delivery and phrasing coupled with Nelson Riddle's orchestrations produced a classic 1954 album, captured wonderfully by Capitol studio's state-of-the-art facility. This album was one of 50 recordings chosen in 2002 by the Library of Congress to be in the National Recording Registry. As is often the case with classics that have passed into cliché, it's up to each new generation to examine anew what made something a classic in the first place. It shouldn't take long for the discriminating listener to hear and appreciate again one of the giants of 20th century music.
